Chapter #5

Someone You're Not Yet

"Excuse me, are you Kevin?" the woman in red dress addresses you. These are the first wonderful words you've heard her speak to you, her voice every bit as enchanting as expected in your daydreams. She leans forward with eyes expecting, anxious for a certain reply. Wait. Kevin? You're not Kevin. So that means she must, and that means you are, so she thinks that, which makes you in the right place at the right time.

You approach her table with a dopey smile, "Yes, yes! I'm Kevin." She sighs with relief and laughs, standing from her seat to greet you properly. "It is nice to meet you," you take her hand and apply a charming kiss, her cheeks showing a slight blush at the gesture. "And by what name should I know you, fair lady?" She laughs quietly and plays along, "You, kind sir, may call me Annabelle." She smiles and breaks character, "Or just Anna for short."

Together, you sit and have the most pleasant small talk two perfect strangers could conceivably have in several minutes time, all the while several key thoughts tug on the tail of your mind. Firstly, she thinks you're someone you're not. Which is all well and good until she either finds out you're not Kevin, or the real Kevin arrives to exchange places and maybe a fist or two with you, the imposter. Secondly, the depth of your wallet is the equivalent of a child's kiddy pool, or in monetary terms, piggy bank. It's becoming quite clear, that for this scenario here to end in success, luck or cunning, but probably both, will need be on your side once again.

"It's funny," Anna says to you, these two simple words instantly erasing the whole of the preceding conversation from your mind. Her expression examines you deeply, and you swallow a squeaky, "What is?" She points a sharp finger at you, "You seem shorter than you said online." You relax just a bit, trying to remain calm and casual, "And you're taller than I imagined," though now with the transposer so near, your imagination knows no limit, "so I suppose we evened out perfectly." Anna nods, agreeing with a polite giggle and grin duo.
