Amelia and her small blue companion followed the dimly lit passage. It gradually sloped up and before long they could feel a draft. Not long after that, they emerged out of a mountainside into a sunny clearing, about a hundred feet across, in what appeared to be a dense forest.
In the center of the clearing Amelia saw the other three girls she had left on the beach, sitting around a large black dragon, itself sitting down, his massive head towering twenty feet over the heads of her companions, with his tail curled up around his feet. His scales were black as night, and shimmered in the sunlight when he moved. His underbelly and the underside of his wings were tinged crimson, and she could see thin wisps of smoke rising from his nostrils.
The dragon seemed to be expecting her, as he looked straight at her and she heard him say in her mind, "Ah, welcome Amelia! I sensed you beneith the mountain. We've been waiting for you!" He turned his gaze to the small blue dragon that had come with Amelia, and again, spoke telepathically, "Thank you for bringing her here. You may go now."
The small blue dragon turned and walked off into the forest, leaving the girls alone with the large dragon.
"Oh, hi Amelia!" Krystal said excitedly. "This is Vermithrax. He came to us right after you left! He said he'd protect us from the other dragons here, and help us figure out which one of us was supposed to become the Queen of the Dragons!"
"That's right," Vermithrax thought at them. "I needed you all together first though. I am glad to see you survived your adventure under the mountain. We dragons have no society as you know it. I am somewhat of a sorcerer but, even my considerable influence is very limited here."
Keira interrupted, "Hey, now that we're all together, why don't we get with figuring out who the Queen of the Dragons is going to be?"
Vermithrax chuckled audibly. "Not so fast. The sun is going down, and it gets cold at night here. You should gather materials to build a fire, we will rest here tonight and continue our quest in the morning."
With that the girls began gathering sticks and branches from the nearby forest. Vermithrax dug a pit with his claws, and the girls threw their firewood in the pit. It wasn't pretty but it didn't need to be. After about an hour of work, as the sun was starting to set, they were quite sweaty but had gathered a large pile of tinder and branches. Vermithrax told them to stand back, and then he took a deep breath, and exhaled a stream of flame over the firewood. A roaring flame was kindled and the girls, still naked, sat around the fire to keep themselves warm.
Vermithrax coiled his great tail around the fire and behind the girls, who, being very tired at this point, found as comfortable positions as they could on the ground and fell fast asleep.
