Josh watched the adults, his head swiveling back and forth. When Vito said Josh wasn't his kid, the lady made a sad face. He knelt on the seat and stuck out his hand.
"I'm Josh." He shook her hand solemnly. He noticed she had shiny pink fingernails. They were the same color as bubblegum.
She smiled at him. "I'm Kanya. Are you going in vacation?" Her eyes darted over to Vito.
Vito looked over at the lady but said, "Mind your own business, kid." Josh had the feeling he was saying it to Kanya too.
Josh leaned over to whisper across the aisle. "I'm going to see my Uncle Pinky. My Mommy and Daddy died in a car so I'm going to visit him for a while. Vito has to go along because he thinks I'll get lost in the airport." He scoffed.
A cold finger of dread trailed down Kanya's spine as she recognized just who Josh was. She saw the headlines last week. One of the top men in the mob syndicate was cleaning house and the dom bumped off one of the major players in-house. His wife had been killed along with him when their car blew up. The cops knew who was responsible, they had their connections too, but did nothing about it.
Here she was running from Raul and ends up on the same plane as the little heir. Dumb luck, wasn't it? The guy with Josh couldn't know who she was, could he? He was handsome alright, in a big meaty way, his hair was dark and slick but he didn't look like he had much of a sense of humor. He was delivering Joshua Verone to his uncle, Marco Pinciato aka Pinky.
Tremulously, she smiled at the boy. "You seem mature enough to fly alone, but I'm sure your family just wanted to be sure." Her smile grew as the boy nodded sagely.
"Sit down, kid." Vito's eyes were telling Kanya to back off.
Josh slumped back down into his seat, he knew that tone of voice. If he didn't listen, Vito would give his arm a hard squeeze and make him do it. His arm was sore enough from learning that lesson. He looked over at Kanya. She smiled at him.
Suddenly a vibration started shimmering through the plane. Josh could feel a grinding and shaking under him. The plane tilted wildly and Josh slid in his seat toward the aisle. He looked over at Kanya, afraid. Her eyes were real big too. She reached out and grasped his hand. "It's okay, honey. Sometimes planes run into bumps in the air." But her eyes looked scared too. Josh held onto her hand real tight.
