Chapter #5

Little one

by: Trever Kelley Author IconMail Icon
You stopped cold in your tracks looking around everywhere for source the noise, but did not see anything. You started walking more cautiously than before and again heard the squeaking.''What the hell is that? It sounds so close yet I don't see anything.' you wondered, setting the egg down trying to get a better look around.

Again the squeak came but this time so did another noise. Rocks moving around the ground, very close to you. Quickly turning toward the noise you notice the egg wobbling slightly. 'No... it can't be this close to hatching already can it? What am I supposed to do if it hatches? It could attack me!' Just then the squeak came louder and you noticed a crack in the shell. Fearing the worst you stumbled backward and began crawling slowly away extremely cautious of the emerging creature. Soon the crack bobbed up and down as if on a top and finally fell to the ground revealing a opal nose matching that of the shell. It did not take long for the rest of the shell to come off the small creature. It stumbled along the ground looking weakly at its surroundings. You had a slight twinge of fear but that was rapidly vanishing as you stared at the small dragon-ling. Having finished its first look around the beginning of the cave it looks toward you and quickly locks with your eyes once you are in its sight.

How could something so beautiful be as dangerous as people say. They are intelligent enough to speak and even hold their own royal family in the deep recesses of Sulu. This reason made you wonder how the war was even started, but you quickly withdrew that from your mind as you once again concentrated on the majesty that stood before you.

As you slowly moved your hand toward it, not wanting to frighten it, it moved it's head toward you, Almost eagerly. As you got closer you felt something strange. Like a continuous breeze of cool air on your face, It put you at ease. When you finally touched it's forehead, You were completely immersed
in this feeling from head to toe. As you moved your hand away the feeling receded only slightly. 'What was that? It felt good... I wonder if it has to do with this dragon... seems like the only thing it could be.'

As if reading your thoughts, the little one began getting excited bobbing its little head up and down and swinging its tail around. You can only chuckle slightly at the newborns antics, that is until he leaped onto your lap and began lapping at your chin with a warm tongue, making you let out a small yelp in surprise.'Damn It looked like it was going for my neck! He may be just born but im sure those teeth are still pretty damn sharp.' Again as if hearing you in your thoughts the dragon stopped its licking and looked at you with sorrowful eyes shaking its head quickly and giving you what could only be described as a frown. 'Odd... I wonder if he can somehow read my expressions or something... he reacts to everything I do and think... wait think?! sigh... given the circumstances I don't think it would be wrong to think I'm completely insane.

Again responding to your train of thought it rams you in the side waking you from your mind struggle. It looks at you roughly and you begin to see thoughts that aren't your own flow into your mind. Some confusion, but mainly happiness and a strange reassurance that this really was happening. 'Maybe... yes... I don't know what it is, but this little guy really is growing on me.' Suddenly satisfied the newborn curls up onto your chest and slowly drifts into his first sleep outside his first home. Feeling the rhythm of his tiny heart you as well are soon lulled to sleep.
