Chapter #5

High School Confidential

"I'm kind of on my way somewhere," she admitted with a shrug, drawing a small device out of the leather case. "But... Just hold on a sec."

Lisa looked away quickly when she pricked herself with the sharp end of whatever it was, as she was not too fond of blood, even a few small drops.

"Sorry, you squeamish? I'm just testing my blood sugar. Diabetic, like I said. It's in order, though." She removed the disposable strip, tossing it into a nearby trashcan and replacing the tester into the case along with her camera. "Like I was saying, if you don't mind tagging along..."

"No, not at all!" A chance to see more of the town with someone who knew it as her guide would be a perfect opportunity. "Where are you going? And why were you taking pictures of the restaurant?"

"City Council's hired me to put together the photo format for some of the new pamphlets they're putting out. I put in the lowest bid, so I got the job. They're really pushing the tourism, but I suppose it's second in income to the restaurants around here. As for where I'm going, I'm going to my high school sport practice."

Lisa blinked as she followed her down the sidewalk. "Sports? This town actually as sports?"

"Well, only one," she admitted with a sheepish grin. "It was horrible coming here at first; at my old school I played soccer, track, lacrosse, field hockey... You name it. All they have here is sumo. I guess the boys on the sumo team are like football players anywhere else, the kings of the school. I photograph some practices and matches for the school website. Plus..." Another grin, this one with more of a blush. "What can I say? I wouldn't want to be fat myself, but big guys have it going on."

The two females talked as they made their way to the school, and Mona, aka Flash, recounted the difficulties of a thin person living in the fattest town in America. She had to order all her clothes online, it was hard finding healthy food (she and her mother grew a lot of vegetables themselves in their back lawn), and people were pretty distrustful of her, especially when they saw her walking or jogging.

The common residence didn't usually react well to Mona's skinny size and she was often viewed as a prying tourist herself.

The school hallways were twice as wide as a normal school's, as were the doors. Flash led Lisa to the gym, where instead of the standard basketball lines there was the painted lines for two professional-sized sumo rings. Almost twenty teenage boys were doing stretches, and not one of them looked as if they weighed under two-fifty.

"See him...?" Flash said, nodded towards a boy with the letter C for Captain on his warm-up shirt. He was tall, over six feet, and was in the heavy-average section in weight compared to the other boys. He had dark curly hair. "That's...
