Chapter #7

Miss 'I Like Chicken', Private Eye

    by: Unknown
“What was that?” Lisa asked.

“I’m just telling my stomach to stay silent,” Jumper replied. A groan from her lower figure agreed.

“Shall we take her to Fridley’s?” Tilly asked, pretending that Lisa wasn’t there.

Jumper shrugged. “Whatever.”

Tilly led the way into an isolated as possible yellow building. “You’re going to like this, journalist. If they ever get big enough Fridley’s will become the alternative to KFC. Welcome to the spot where you can order chicken 125 different ways.”

They were sat at a booth very quickly. Tilly and Lisa sat on one side: Jumper’s wide frame kept anyone else from sitting by her. A waitress bigger than Tilly but smaller than Jumper came to take their order.

“I’ll just have water, a coffee, tea, and a Sprite,” Tilly said, not even looking at the menu.

The waitress looked at Tilly as if she was some sort of freak, which wasn’t too hard to do. “We carry Sierra Mist.”

“That, then.”

Lisa glanced at the five page menu, trying to find something small enough for her to finish. “Just the grilled chicken sandwich.”

The waitress looked at her as if she was a freak too. Lisa did stand out, being the only skinny person present and ordering the healthiest thing she could find.

Jumper removed her sunglasses. She held up the menu. “See this box I’m pointing at?”

The waitress nodded.

“All of it.”

Lisa asked Jumper a few questions as they waited for their food. The pear shaped woman grunted out answers that contained the very words possible. Tilly remained silent throughout the conversation. Lisa was growing frustrated. What was so special about this woman, besides her extravagant manner of eating?

Finally the food came. Lisa groaned at the size of her sandwich, which was a good four inches thick and covered the whole plate. All the other plates were put in front of Jumper. Fried chicken, chicken legs, chicken wings, baked chicken, teriyaki chicken, chicken strips… There were so many plates that the waitress had to leave the tray stand at the table. Jumper nonchalantly tucked into her dinner.

Lisa gasped at the speed of which Jumper swallowed the dozen different chicken recipes she had ordered. She wondered how a woman could stomach this much food and still have room to eat at several other establishments after this.

However, while Jumper’s eating antics were amusing, Lisa still felt frustrated. This whole lunch seemed pointless. There was no way she could finish this massive sandwich before her. And there didn’t seem to be a point for Tilly to introduce her to Jumper.

She coughed. “Tilly, is there a reason why we’re here?”

“Sorry for the wait, journalist, but you don’t bother Jumper in the middle of a food run.” She swirled her coffee. “Jumper’s habit of eating out like chain mail also helps her part time career. You could say Jumper is the closest thing SB has to a private investigator.”

Jumper belched. “Hush it. You know there are people around who want things to stay hidden.”

“I know.” Tilly smiled her creepy smile. “You’ve got the greatest piece of evidence, don’t you?”

Jumper snorted. “If you desperately wanted to see that you should have said so sooner.”

“See what?” Lisa asked.

Jumper smiled her wicked smile. Lisa felt a little uneasy between the two grins. “Let’s just say it would drive some of the people at power absolutely insane.” She reached into her bag and pulled out…
