Phoenix and Maya went to a park by the supermarket.
“So who’s this witness, Nick?”
“Street vendor, according to Gumshoe. He said he got a box lunch off of her.” Box lunch, Phoenix thought suddenly. Could it be?
“I knew you would always come back for my squid wheels.”
Phoenix flinched when a pink lunchbox was thrust into his face. “Angel Starr! You’ve been selling lunches here?”
“Of course, sugar. Where else would I sell lunches?”
“Who is she, Nick?” Maya asked.
“Oh that’s right, Maya. Miss Star was a witness in a case I had when you went back to your hometown to pick up your duties. Did you witness the murder that took place in the supermarket yesterday?”
“Yes. I was just getting some fresh ingredients and dropped off a lunch for one of my boyfriends.”
One of my boyfriends? Phoenix thought.
“So let’s cut to the chase already,” Maya said.
“Yeah,” Phoenix started. “Did you—”
“What kind of lunches do you have?” Maya licked her lips. Phoenix almost fell over.
“My specialties today are a stir fry box or a marinated beef sandwich.”
“Man, they both sound good. But which to have?”
“I can tell you’re the hungry type,” Miss Star smiled. “If you’re interested, I have my special ‘Ten Lunchbox Hungry Man’ set. Ten lunches and appetizers put together at an affordable price. Ten pounds of my most fattening food to fill up those hungry tummies.”
“Sounds great!” Maya said. “Wanna split, Nick?”
“No, I’m not hungry. Um…how much do I owe you, Miss Star?”
“Oh don’t worry about that, we’re old friends! However, I just might ask for a favor in the future. You’ll help me, right?”
Phoenix gulped. “Could I ask you a few questions, Miss Star?”
Maya went over to a park bench and opened the tower of lunchbox’s she had gotten. The lunches were stuffed with some of her favorites like macaroni and cheese, fish ‘n’ chips, pizza and chicken nuggets. While Phoenix interviewed Angel Star, Maya ate with abandon. Just why was Maya so hungry?
