Truth be told

But before she could answer, a horse's neigh caused both to turn. On an all black horse with flaming red eyes, rode Jezebel. Her eyes filled with hate on the scene before her.

"You lying girl," Jezebel said coldly, "Why haven't you killed this evil human? Why are you befriending him?!" Aurora looked scared. She hadn't expected her mother to follow her here, to find Matthew. Matthew was scared as well. Though Jezebel appeared to be a beautiful person, her eyes were filled with a hatred and darkness that made him shiver.

"Because he was nice to me," Aurora said replied.

"That just makes him weak! I'll kill him myself if you don't! " Jezebel yelled back, "And because of him, his weakness has spread to you. You'll have to be punished as well."

"Mother . . .no . .please," Aurora replied, remembering what types of punishments her mother would give her for disobedience. Matthew saw the fear in Aurora and looked back at Jezebel. For some reason, he was no longer afraid.

"Hey old woman!" Matthew yelled out, "Why do you hate humans? Why do you want Aurora to kill us?"

"Because you killed other demons and magical creatures for no other reason than personal gain! So why shouldn't my daughter kill a few of you?" Jezebel yelled back.

"And one injustice allows you to make another?" Matthew asked, not realizing he moved between the two women.

"It does when I get a sweet taste of victory after having a stupid human 'hero' mate with me to make her," Jezebel yelled back, furious. But the moment the words left her mouth, Jezebel realized her mistake. She silently mouthed "shit" as Aurora heard this confession.

"Wait, you told me my parents were phoenixes and I was cursed by a human priest to be like this!" Aurora said, standing up, "But in fact I'm half-human?! Why mother? Why did you do this?!"

"Because your father was a beast slayer. And after years of watching my kind fall, I decided to take action against him. With a special potion, it lured him to me and forced us to make a child. I left you with him, hoping you'd serve as punishment to him. But he just threw you away and I found you and raised you. And to pay for what they did, I wanted you to become a killer of humans!," Jezebel replied.

"I won't do it anymore mother," Aurora said, "I won't kill humans."

"Shame," Jezebel said, pulling a dagger out. Jezebel was always a careful planner. And in the event Aurora ever turned on her completely, she had the Two Moon poison ready for sixteen years to kill her daughter. She had laced this dagger with it and threw it at Aurora. Even the tiniest scratch would eventually be fatal to anything with phoenix blood.

Aurora hadn't expected her mother to attack her. The moment she saw the dagger fly, she was scared. "Mother's probably laced that with the poison," she thought, "I can't get hit." As she was about to dodge, Matthew jumped and took the blade to shoulder. The blade ran through and stopped with the hilt on his shoulder. "Matthew!" Aurora yelled. She turned to her mother and roared with rage. As fast as she could, she charged her mother.

Even Jezebel was mildly shocked at Matthew move. She didn't expect such an act of selflessness from the boy. While happy with the damage done to the boy, she knew the poison wouldn't even harm him, as he wasn't part phoenix. She turned and saw Aurora come at her, swiping her with her now clawed hands. There was a deep gash in Jezebel's stomach as she backed away.

"You'd strike your own mother?" Jezebel asked.

"You aren't my mother any more," Aurora said, "Leave before I destroy you!"
