"And if I don't get out of your way?" Samuel challenges. Physically the challenge is a laugh. Samuel may be able to look her in the eye, even look down at her if she is not in high heels, but he does not have minotaur muscles and she can bat him around at will.
Which is the problem from a legal view. Since she can beat him like a drum, she has no right to use violence against him. She would be the one facing the law, for attacking the mayor's son yet.
So instead, Gwen picked him up, using two hands unnecessarily, but she does not want to risk accidentally hurting the pest. Taking a step forward, she puts him down to her side and resumes her trip.
Not for long. She soon feels an entirely too familiar arm around her shoulders. "Get that off of me..." She manages to avoid threatening to break it off. Samuel had called her on that one time. The physical results had been most painful for him, but the fuss with the law, her parents, having to apologize to Samuel, only to have him casually ignore it and ask for a date she could hardly refuse him ... They both agreed that had been a victory for Samuel.
But a girl does have a right to keep a boy's hands off, and so the simple statement puts the ball back in his court. So... "You touched me. Why shouldn't I touch you?"
That argument had worked last time, at least for a little bit, but Gwen had had time to consider the matter since then. "You enjoyed my touch. I don't enjoy yours." Samuel is about to respond, but Gwen continues "Do you really want to claim you were not disappointed when I put you down?" With a sign, Samuel removes his arm, but not his presence from her side.
"Ah the young lovebirds..."
"Say, which one gets on top?"
"Neither at the moment. Sammy needs to get a new negligee."
Gwen carefully ignores the comments from Samuel's lickspittles. They are another trap for her. If she gives in to the urge to shut their foul mouths, she would again be in trouble with a court that did not like minotaurs, and worse, Samuel would show up and nobly make all her troubles go away with his father's influence and money. And she would have to be grateful to him. No, she must shut her ears.
She does wonder why half of the barbs are aimed at Samuel. One would think his lackeys would not dare. Possibly Samuel has some deep plot to seduce her some way... Well actually he certainly does, several of them. But whether this is an aspect of it... In any case, she can't ask him to stop the comments. That would be effective, but that would mean being indebted to Samuel, and he only wanted one payment...
It doesn't help that she is half-minotaur. As the true daughter of the town mage, she might have been eligible to marry Samuel. As an adopted daughter and of dangerous blood, ... he was being 'generous' to offer her the position of mistress. There may be a lot of girls willing, or even eager, to accept that, but Gwen is not one of them.
Is it possible that her dislike of Samuel is because she can't have him? Gwen rejects the idea. He is simply not to her taste. But she has done enough thinking on the subject and turns to listening closer to Samuel's chatter.
Happily she does not have to listen long as she has reached the merchant she intends to buy from. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
