A FEW WEEKS LATER
"Don't forget the first swimming and diving meet of the year is this afternoon at Tremper High School. All members of the LHS swim and dive team meet in the pool room at 2:45 after school; the bus to Tremper will leave promptly at 3:00. All students interested in attending the meet the student bus will leave at 4:30. The auditions for the spring musical will be held this
Wednesday in the theater, the audition spots are filling fast! Also, during lunch hours for the next week, we will collecting for are annual Holidays for the Homeless drive, so spare some change to help make the holidays special for someone else. Thanks and have a great day LHS students and staff!"
The day went by fast, everyone was pumped for the swim meet. The Tremper Devils were the LHS Crusaders biggest swim rivals. The meet was going to be crowded, everyone was going to come with as much team spirit as possible, it would be a great way to kick off the swimming season. Finally, the end of the day came and the team met at the pool room.
The team got on the bus. They were all chatty and loud; this was going to be a tough meet, but afterall the team had been training hard for weeks, well, everyone but Connor. Connor hardly made it near a pool deck over these past few weeks. He had kept so busy creating charts and time scheduals, reorganizing past swimming records, and taking inventory of the swim teams materials and ordering new stuff for the team. Connor hadn't realized how big of a responsiblity managing the team would be. Connor had worked hard and loved being the team manager and now at the first meet and with everything else in order, he could focus solely on the team today.
The LHS team finally arrived at Tremper High School. They got ready and started warm-ups. After warm-ups the team got in their huddle and Coach Joe gave his traditional pep talk; then the team perpormed their swim team school chant. After the team finished all their prep work, Coach Joe pulled out a box.
"Our new team wear came in just in time for the first meet and I wanted you guys to wear it."
Coach passed out the speedos to each of the members and then gave them each a T-shirt. The boys all changed. The T-shirts all fit tight, the swim team loved to show off their muscles, with good reason, they work hard to have them.
"And for Connor, I know you're not on the team this year, but I got you a team speedo and T-shirt, after all your an important part of the team. I wanted to surprise you, so I just used your sizing from last year."
"Thanks Coach." Connor replied as he put his speedo in his bag.
The meet started and Connor grabbed his shirt and put it on. Connor pulled the shirt over his head. It fit a little tighter than he remembered. It must just be because he had a shirt on under it, "That's it," Connor thought. He took off the shirt underneath and put back on the team shirt. It was still tight, "Preshrunk," of course thought Connor. The shirt clung tight to his softening midsection, but Connor didn't seem to notice his midsection was the problem, preferring to make excuses blaming the shirt. He always did gain a little weight on the off season, but he was pretty ripped at the begining of the season because it was his senior year and he did do pre-season work outs. But maybe these few weeks occupied as team manager started to take its toll...on his waistline.
