Alex’s Mom looked around so fast she nearly dropped the coffee grounds she was holding. “What do you mean they don’t fit? They fit when we bought them two months ago.”
“Well––” Alex began. “They’re a little too tight.”
“Too tight?” His Mom repeated striding over to where Alex sat at the table, his belly seeping out of his clothes while empty sweets rappers littered the table around him. “Well that’s hardly surprising with all that you’ve been eating lately.”
“What do you mean?” Alex said still blushing red, even though he new full well what she meant.
“Alex look at yourself.” His mother barked. “You’ve let yourself go! Did you just eat all this?” She asked indicating the empty boxes.
“Well yeah.” Alex said sheepishly. “But I thought eating breakfast was good for you.”
“Not when your breakfast is a box of cookies and a dozen cupcakes!” His mother practically bellowed. “How can you be surprised your clothes don’t fit when you eat like that?!”
Alex shrugged and his mother continued her rant. “Look at this Alex.” She said jabbing her finger into his round belly. “This is too much. You’re going on a diet young man.”
“A d-diet.” Alex choked. “But Mom it’s only a couple of pounds.”
“A couple of pounds my eye!” His Mom said. “You go put on those clothes Alex, I don’t care how tight they are, you are wearing them to your cousin’s wedding do you understand me?”
“But Mom, they don’t fit!” Alex insisted.
“And whose fault is that?” His mother demanded.
“Well.” Alex said. “One of the buttons popped off the shirt.”
His mom sighed. “Bring it to me.” She said. “I’ll sew it back on.
Twenty minutes later Alex was looking at himself self-consciously in the mirror. At his mothers behest he had squeezed himself into his too small clothes. His shirt was straining to contain his girth and his pants were painfully tight in the waist and buttocks. He literally had to suck in his stomach to keep all the buttons from bursting on his shirt. He had also put on a jacket and tie that detracted slightly from his midriff. As long as he didn’t eat anything at the wedding everything should be fine. Maybe.
