Chapter #12Batgirl takes a bite out of crime by: SonicV When you are bred for the sole purpose of becoming an assassin, to the point where you can’t even have a bottle unless you break your dad’s thumb and he refuses to speak to with words and thus make movement become the only language you understand, it’s a very likely possibility that life is not exactly going to be all that great. However, we all choose our own destinies and Cassandra Cain did just that after she made her first kill.
Up until that point, she had followed her father, David Cain, and did whatever he told her to do, even when he outright refused the few times she wanted him to read to her. She was so young and so innocent, but despite what she perceived to be right thanks to him, what she felt on that day when she was eight years old opened her eyes. Feeling someone fading away by her own hands, it was too horrendous for her, and she fled.
Free, but now alone, Cassandra found herself in Gotham City and from there, she found herself in the same position as Barbara Gordon once had been in years ago. The very sight of Batman and what he did made her absolutely certain of whom she wanted to be.
It took Gotham getting reduced to a No Man’s Land for the Dark Knight to actually meet her, but after which, Batman knew what he had to do. From there on, Cassandra got her mind rewired by a telepath so she could speak, and then wound up getting trained by Lady Shiva of all people so she could get her fighting style back. She’s now one of the best fighters around, and to be Batman’s sidekick, she has to be.
“Good Cassandra.” Batman managed to speak between several dodges as he was kept on his toes. Facing off against someone who knows your next five moves just by watching you take one step isn’t exactly easy, but then again, it wasn’t supposed to be.
On the other side, Batgirl was getting a little tired of this constant dodging. Usually her opponents would think they’d found a shot and go for it only for her to then grab their arm and snap it at the joint. Ever the calculating one however, her mentor was purposely keeping himself on the defensive long enough, until finally he gave her an opening when it seemed he was going to throw a punch. As soon as Cassandra went for it though, he ducked down and swept at her feet, but as she fell, she grabbed him and flung him down and as soon as his back collided with the ground, he felt her arm blades up against his throat.
“Excellent.” Batman smiled at her. Even with the full face mask, he could tell that his apprentice was doing the same. Once she let him, he headed to a bottle he’d placed nearby and began pouring a glass which was then handed to her. Training was sweaty work and like Bruce had said, she’d been really showing her stuff.
“You’re performance continues to be commendable Cassandra, I hope you know that. Still, I’m curious, do you ever find it…difficult to not ‘finish’ the job.” Good thing Cassandra had finished her drink, otherwise she couldn’t have asked “What?” Batman hated himself for having just said that but he couldn’t ignore what could happen “I’m not accusing you, I just want to make sure you are alright. The conditioning Cain put you through cannot be overcome easily and although I’m confident you would never intentionally kill anyone-”
“Please,” she stopped him right there. The girl who now had a voice wanted to use it “you don’t need to…worry about me. I can never forget what I felt, and I never want to go…through that again.” She might still be working on how to express and think in words, but she knew what she wanted; to be what Batman is and to never again become the same monster that had taken a life.
“I’m glad to hear.” Batman responded. Cassandra wasn’t the only one who could read people like a book and Batman knew that her words were entirely genuine. Plus, just in case there were any unexpected surprises that dear old dad left behind for her, hopefully this new technique would give Cassandra more of a fighting chance.
“Now, I’m going to have you learn a new technique. It’s rather unusual, but very powerful, and in the right hands, nonlethal. Lately, a lot female heroes have been utilizing it. Wonder Woman was the one who first displayed it.” Cassandra’s eyes suddenly lit up through her mask once she heard that. Her mentor was real Casanova both in and out of the costume, and amongst who knows how many women, lately she had been seeing him with the Amazon Princess more often than usual. It got her curious and it even reminded her of her first kiss, with Superboy, but all pondering and reflecting was put on hold while Batman continued to speak “It’s taught on her Island since only women can learn it, and is used as both an intimidation method as well as a way of containing criminals. It’s a man eating technique.”
“……Man Eating?” Cassandra may have a hard time grasping words, but she wasn’t alone in thinking that what the Dark Knight just uttered sounded like complete nonsense. They lived in a world where people could stretch like rubber, scream metal bending sound waves, or fly, but no one in the Bat Family had powers like that, which brings up the obvious question “How could I eat someone?”
“Simple,” Batman had his back to her, and as he turned, his costume looking particularly ominous all of a sudden even though nothing had changed, he was honestly trying not to enjoy this as he answered question “All you had to do was drink that glass of magic juice.”
