“Right,” you say, trying to take control, “Commandant Reddling, any ideas as to whereabouts on the planet we have landed?”
“Sorry, Captain but all my equipment became disabled when he were hit.”
“Okay, Master Chief McGuire?”
“Captain.” You turn to see your engineer already getting stuck into his suddenly heavier workload.
“Good. You remain here with Commandant Reddling and see what you can do to fix her up. Commandant, you’re in charge until I return. Lord Freeman, I believe that your expertise in bartering will come in useful here so I want you to accompany me.”
“Very good Captain, I’ll start to load the buggy with some Pylene.”
“Good. McGuire, have you had a once over? Is there anything you need?”
“A couple of aileron spades for the left wing but other than that I don’t think there is much more damage that a hammer won’t fix.”
“Captain? Your orders for me, Captain?” Lieutenant Commander Shields enquired.
“Lieutenant, you stay here, under the command of Reddling and...”
“Stay here? Begging your pardon, Captain but wouldn’t it be better for me to join you and Lord Freeman...”
“No, no, we’ll be travelling blind and it’s far too...”
“Dangerous? You don’t think I can hack it?”
“No, it’s not that, it’s just that...”
“I’m coming! And you can apologise later.” She turns away to go and help pack the buggy leaving you speechless. Reddling replaces her by your side.
“Not being undermined are you, Captain?”
“No, no. Everything’s, uh, everything’s shiny. Everything is AOK. Think you can manage while I’m gone?”
“Will you?” Reddling jokes, “Anyway, here’s a small map of Kepler. This is the mining station, you’ll find everything you need there, the miner’s settlement is just next to it but watch out, here is a known Miras-Guhl settlement. It’s only small but the population is unknown.”
“Thanks. Let’s hope we don’t head straight for that then.”
“Well, I think we landed somewhere in this area, judging by the surroundings and the current alignment of the skies.”
“So if we take a course heading across here then we’ll be fine.”
“Hypothetically yes, but this map is very old, any new settlements or landmarks will be missing. But if I had to, I’d say heading for the light is your best bet. If we are where I think we are that should be the mining station.”
“Okay, thanks for the heads up.”
Heading back into the ship to check on the buggy you find it fully loaded for the experiment.
“Are you ready Captain?” Lieutenant Commander Shields asks.
“Yes. Hop in, let’s get this show on the road.”
