A sudden rustling noise straight behind him. He quickly turns around, nothing. Then to his right, part of a bush was moving, but nothing was there. A large splash near him forces him to turn back to the lake, he sees ripples in the water. "Ok, this is freaking me out".
Then, directly in front of him, something begins to emerge. A head comes out of the water, it belonged to a girl with long blue hair and blue eyes, and she is staring at him. "Ok....um, was it you making all that noise?". She nods. With a sigh, "whew, alright. I sure am glad to see someone else. But why are you in the water? Why won't you come out?". She shakes her head. "Why not?". She backs up in the water, and her tail fin appears. "A mermaid!", he yells. She darts underwater, and doesn't come back up for a few minutes, but with her head just barely out of the water. "There you are, sorry about that, I was just surprised. So, your a mermaid?", the mermaid nods.
"You can't come out, but it was you making all that noise, what, can you only come onto land for a limited amount of time?", again, she nods. "I see, well, my name is Mathew, but everyone just calls me Matt". She finally says her first words. Ma-Marina". He smiles, it's nice to meet you Marina", she smiles back.
Looking up at the sun, he guesses that it'll get dark soon. "Hmmm, the climb to the cave is too dangerous, so I guess I'll sleep by this lake".
He makes his way to the forest, but hears Marina start to move, looking behind, he sees a worried look on her face. "Oh, I'm not leaving, I promise I'll be right back".
He starts to scour the forest for something he could use. he finds a few decent sized sticks that were as big as him and some large leaves. He starts to ferry them back and forth, on his last leg, he reaches down to pick up a stick, but it won't budge, he pulls with all his strength and it finally gives, sending him backwards. "Ow, that hurt". Looking at what was holding the stick, he only sees tree sap, he decides to test it. Finding a smaller stick, he stabs it and pulls, but the stick won't budge until he yanks with all his might, causing the stick to snap and sending him backwards again. "What is with that tree sap? That's strong!".
He assembles a simple lean-to facing the lake. "Alright, that's done. It may not be much, but at least it's better than nothing". Looking back at the lake, he sees that Marina had been watching him the entire time. He sits down by the edge, "if, you don't mind me asking, why are living in such a small lake? I though your kind lived in the ocean". She looks down. Thinking he shouldn't have asked that, she looks back up and at him. "A-an accident. I did live in the ocean...with my people,b-but I was teleported out her by this lake, and I can't make it back before I hit the time limit....". "Your trapped here, all by yourself?". She nods. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't of asked that". "It-it's alright".
They talk until late into the night. Matt then goes to bed in his lean-to and Marina dives sinks deep into the lake.
