Chapter #22

Rats in the stores

    by: smitch Author IconMail Icon
Sean is still buzzing after being inside Russo's head, dancing and shuffling to the locker room. You give him a shove, "Fucks sake Sean, you're making me look like an idiot!" He turns flipping you the bird moonwalking through the door.

As your changing in the locker room, you remind Sean about the stuff you collected for the next spell. You shudder a little thinking about the night you collected the grave dirt. "We still going to get the rest of the ingredients from the secure storeroom?" He asks.

You nod, "But we still need a distraction some reason for them to open the door."

"I got that sorted," he grins, "made a couple of smoke bombs yesterday. Robert caught me drying them out and wouldn't leave me alone until I let him have one."

"Are they safe?" You ask nervously.

"Yeah, just some sugar and potassium nitrate. Robert loved it, the little shit set it off in his room and smoked himself out. Good job the rest of the family was out, but I think you've got a little pyromaniac in the making there!" He sniggers. He shows you one of the bombs, its really small. "Only enough to make a little smoke, not enough to set off any alarms hopefully."

Andy is out for the day so its just a case of working through the list he's left for you. Mainly clearing up the workshop and crushing some packing boxes in the huge mechanical monster at the back of the parking lot. It didn't take long to finish, and you walk to the hanger to check the storerooms. "You still got that old pamphlet?" You ask, he pulls it from his back pocket handing it to you. Turning to the fifth section in the book you check the list. "Yup, looks like the ingredients we need."

As you walk in to the hanger Jack looks up from the computer screen, "Andy asked us to check how much space we had left in the racks." You groan.

"He should have asked me to do that!" Jack snaps as he gets to his feet.

"Yeah, but he says your time is more valuable than ours." You smile, he agrees and returns to the computer.

Making your way to the back of the hanger, you see the three doors to the secure storerooms. You tap on the right hand door, "This one."

Sean disappears behind the racks to finds some empty containers, it's not long before he returns with an armful of plastic containers which he then leaves near the stores, "I think this will be enough" He says.

"You got that spare mind-band?" You ask, He pulls one from his pocket and nods. You take a deep breath, "Ready?" He gives you the thumbs up.

Sean climbs onto your shoulders, and checks through the opening at the top of the door. Lighting the fuse on the smoke bomb he drops it through the vent, and then jumps from your shoulders. You catch him lowering him to the ground. It only takes a minute before smoke starts escaping from the bottom of the door.

"Jack! You'd better get over here, I can smell something coming from the storerooms." You shout.

He ambles over and looks surprised as wisps of smoke escape from the bottom of the door. "Stand back boys, I don't like the look of this." From a chain attached to his belt he selects a brass key and turns it in the lock. You watch as Sean pulls the band from his pocket.

As he opens the door smoke billows out into his face. Sean moves quick and slaps the mind-band on Jack's forehead. With a groan he stumbles back crumpling into your arms.

Sean looks between you and Jack. But you growl "Get a fucking move on you moron! I don't know how long he'll be unconcious!"

He grabs a few containers and dives into the clearing smoke, you lay Jack on the ground and wave your arms like a madman trying to clear the smoke which is heading towards the alarm.

Sean re-emerges from the room with full containers, he stacks them out of sight just as the band on Jack appears. He peels it off and slips it into his pocket. Jack groans as you sit him up. "What the hell happened?"

"There was a bit of smoke, coming from the storeroom and when you opened the door you kinda passed out." You say biting your lip. He raises his hand to his forehead. You help him to his feet and he gingerly peers into the storeroom, everything looks normal and there's no sign of any smoke.

He casts a suspicious eye over you both, "You didn't go in there did you?" You look at Sean at shake your heads. "Good." he locks the door again, "Everything looks fine and I can't be bothered to file the reams of paperwork. Nothing happened OK boys?" He points to you and Sean in turn, and you nod. "Damn blackouts, Doc was right about them." He mutters as he returns to the front desk.

With a smile you high-five Sean, "Excellent!"

There's still some time till the end of work so you thumb through the old phamplet you found in reception. Fliping it over you run a thumb over the picture of the old Salopek office in New York, you still can't believe there is some kind of connection between the Libra and Salopek even back in 1946. You suck on you lip wondering why they still hold the ingredients for the spells. Perhaps Jack knows more than he let on originally; you think about his memory-band that Sean has, it might give you some answers to Salopek's history.

Sean taps you on the shoulder, "We need to get this stuff out of here." He points to the containers, "The trouble is Jack's been watching us like an eagle."

Thinking for a moment, you walk back to Jack leaning on the desk. "Got anything for the crusher? We got it all powered up out back."

He looks at you through narrowed eyes, rubbing his thick white beard. "There's some packing boxes towards the back of rack F, make sure you get them all and don't make a mess." He growls.

Sorting through the boxes you hide the containers inside smuggling them past Jack who watches you both suspiciously each time you pass. It only takes a couple of trips before you've got everything into your pickup, and its not long before both of you are making your way back the the clubhouse.

You have the following choices:

*Pen*
1. Try Jack's mind-band, what's Salopek's history?

2. Back to the club house and the next spell.

*Pen* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
