Chapter #6

Later that week

Ben was hesitant and reticent around his new family at first, whom he wanted to get to know better before he made premature judgments about him. He had been naïve when he had immediately trusted his previous owner. Such thoughts made him shudder hungrily. His previous owner and even the animal "shelter" had failed miserably to feed Ben properly. These factors, combined with his breed's appreciation of food and its availability thanks to his new mistress had led Ben to use food as a crutch to cope with his struggles.

It had been a few days since Ben had been adopted. Ben quickly learned that Katie was a complete pushover towards him whenever she cooked or ate, so she tended to give him food from her plate. She also fed him as much dog-food as he requested; he merely had to whine for a couple of minutes and flip his bowl; and his master or mistress would fill his not small bowl to its brim.

Ben had to start slowly at first; but even now, he noted an ever-increasing capacity in his stomach to hold food. Ben also got little exercise. His house had its own yard, Katie and Sam were too lazy and busy respectively to walk him and the children were too young to walk him outside by themselves. Thus, coupled with Ben's last few months of sedentary activity in the shelter, he was really quite happy to lie around and have his family rub his body all over. Katie still fussed over him that he was too thin and vowed to change that.

That promise came to a head at the end of that week. On Fridays, it was the family's custom to get a meal out. That night, because Jack said that he was feeling ill, Sam went out and got Wendy's. Ben overheard his own name mentioned in the order, although he had no idea what a, "Triple Cheeseburger with Bacon and a Side of Large Fries," was, it sounded curious. Ben patiently waited for Sam to return, a wait which seemed eternal.

Finally, Sam returned with a greasy bag of food which smelled ethereal to Ben. As he unloaded the bag, Sam unwrapped a large, greasy thing which seemed to be he pinnacle of the ethereal smell. After he had given everyone else his food, Sam picked up the greasy delight and placed it in Ben's bowl, where Ben made quick work of it and the other greasy strings which tasted good, but not as good as the pinnacle of other-worldly delights.

This trend would set a trend that would continue every Friday, to Ben's delight.
