Chapter #4

Study them further.

Remembering the tiny, crumpled vehicle you earlier mistook for a bug and stepped on, you pocket your phone and raise your left hand until the flat of your palm is perfectly level with your eyes, squinting to see if there is any movement with the mangled, metal remains. There is not. You must assume you squashed its driver and any passenger within. Unfortunately, you have always been the type of guy who stepped on bugs, very often on purpose. Though known as a superb buddy and all-around gentleman, you were always the kind of guy who would stop to slowly bulldoze the occasional antmound with the toe of one sneaker and eliminate all survivors, sometimes as a macho way to tease a sensitive girlfriend or to simply horse around with a couple other guys, or for any other reason that suited your whims. Most of the time you don’t even need a reason to crush them. You just do.

Disappointed, you quietly curse to yourself. Just because you step on bugs does not mean you also wish to crush tiny people for no reason. Looking at the ruined metal, you wonder what they were thinking as it happened. One or two times before, you indulged in visualizing from the bug-sized perspective, the many occasions when you sleazily lowered a gigantic shoe down upon any number of panicking insects, and you find yourself doing it again now with these people. Were they terrified? Did they see it coming? The rumbling earth as you moved your foot, followed by the cool, uncaring shadow hovering overhead and a malodorous smell of decomposing rubber? Did they comprehend that the sea of waffle-patterned blue and white geometric oddities was a foot – that they were being stepped on?

In the case of mindless bugs, such thoughts were sportive and funny. But these are intelligent beings you squashed, who probably fully comprehended what you were doing to them. And although tiny and insignificant to you in term of size, they may be capable of retaliating. Going around and stepping on these helpless, little guys further, especially for no real reason, might come back to bite you. You recognize it is in likely in your own best interest to show restraint.

Frustrated, you tilt your palm over and finally let the crumpled vehicle tumble off down into an empty field of crops, then stand up to your full height, your legs aching from crouching down so long. In the distance you see a cluster of significantly buildings, significantly taller than the tiny, splintered farmhouses dotting the landscape and pressed into your earlier, ground-deforming footprints. The structures are concentrated and tower-like in appearance, some which look like they could reach high as your knees or even waist. You can tell immediately: that is a city! You can only imagine how marvelous a sight it would be, seeing it from this scale. You think back to a couple years ago when you and couple buddies were visiting the observer floor in what was at the time the tallest building in New York. Staring down at the silent, barely moving gridlocked traffic: nothing down there seemed to matter. You even recall some old guy from another group attempting to seem philosophical to all of you, stating “this view shows each of us small we all truly are.” You imagine comically if he would be saying that to you now if he could see you.

Realizing that you may have to visit that city if you wish to find a way home, you make a point to visit that location. Depending on the tiny people’s technology, they may have some understanding of your location, how you were transported, and why you’re the size of a Kaiju monster. And as much as you love the idea of being such an absolute titan, you are going to need to get some answers. Besides, getting home (if you decide to) may require communicating with and recruiting the tiny people’s assistance, by whatever means necessary. This sparsely populated landscape of fields, forests, and farmland doesn’t seem like it offers much and having inadvertently trampled their barns and farmland, you are not sure these yokels will want to help. Therefore, visiting that city seems like a better option.
