Things got... blurry there for a bit. People were arguing. You think there was a fight? It was so hard to focus... The voices were so vague.
Eventually, you managed to catch someone calling your name.
“Emily... can you hear me?”
“Yes...”
“So you answer to that now... Listen, whatever Derek told you, you can ignore that now. Go back to normal.”
Wrong. “I can’t ignore my boyfriend. I must always make him happy. That’s what’s normal.”
“How is that normal?”
“It’s normal for me to be the girl that I am. A girl who likes to have fun with my boyfriend.” You knew this was a Fact. A Fact that couldn’t be changed so easily.
“Derek’s not your boyfriend, Emily...”
You felt your heart shatter. “Who is my boyfriend?”
“You don’t have one.”
“A pretty girl like me must have a boyfriend.” Another fact.
“Jeez, he really made a mess... And we don’t have much time to fix this...”
It was hard to focus on these words. Your mind was caught in a loop. You needed a boyfriend. You didn’t have one. But you needed one. But you didn’t have one. But you needed one. But you-
“Okay, fine, I’ll be your boyfriend for now.”
Your body felt calmer immediately. “Emily is my boyfriend.”
“That doesn’t... bother you?”
“I need a boyfriend. Emily is my boyfriend.”
“This is gonna be a pain... okay. Wake up, Emily.”
And the fog of the world vanished. You blink awake, trying to remember exactly what you were doing. Derek was pawing all over you, for some reason. Why you’d let a creep like Derek touch you is a mystery. And then Emily showed up. It looked like Derek and Brian were gone now.
...of course. Emily must have saved you! Such a good little guard dog, keeping a flower like you safe. He deserved a reward.
With a sway in your step, you approached a nervous looking Emily and delivered a long, sweet kiss on the lips. He was startled, but that gave you time to drag your fingers down his chest before he pulled away.
“You’re quite the hero, Emily. I wouldn’t expect it~”
He looked around nervously. “Y-you probably shouldn’t call me that in public.”
“Whatever you want, handsome. And I do mean whatever you want.”
You giggled at his little panic. He was so adorable.
“I see the last few years have been... good? For you?”
You waved a dismissive hand. “Boring. School’s such a pain. This is the first party I’ve gotten a chance to go to. I’m just lucky you’re here too.”
Emily rubbed her neck, anxiously. “We should... catch up then. It’s been too long.”
It sounded like he wanted to get some alone time. Well, you weren’t one to deny that, but you had barely been on the dance floor with him yet. You still wanted to have fun!
