Chapter #4

Finding a Fox

    by: KaptainKq Author IconMail Icon
"... Another fox?" Maria asked, rhetorically. She took one more whiff, and caught the unmistakable scent of...

"A male fox," the vixen said aloud. She wasn't sure what to make of this. It was always nice to find a fellow fox. However, she was a bit uneasy about encountering a male fox, especially during this season, where they tended to be a bit... "Excitable." She'd be, more-or-less, alone with this male, and she wasn't sure if she'd be able to thwart any unwelcome advances...

Still, in this situation, Maria decided it'd be a better idea to find him before he found her. Obviously, if she was close enough to smell him, he was close enough to smell her. Getting the drop on him would stop any sort of ambush he could plan, and Maria could avoid some not-quite-welcome sexual penetration (at least take her out to dinner first; then she'd talk). She could smell where he was; it was only a matter of walking over there.

She departed from the trail and embarked into the wooded area on her left, tip-toeing through the brush quietly. Only fifteen feet in --much closer than expected-- she found the individual in question, crouching in a bush with his back to her. He was a svelte, similarly-colored fox, albeit a tad a brighter, wearing a light brown tunic with gray linen pants with a hole in the back for his bushy, white-tipped tail. The only weapon he had on him seemed to be a dagger that he'd strapped to his back loosely. He was staring ahead intently, completely engrossed by... Actually, it didn't really look like he was watching anything in particular.

Maria rolled her eyes; this was child's play. She simply plucked the dagger from the fox's back, rendering completely unarmed. The male fox yelped in surprise.

"Gah!" he cried as he sprung to his feet and turned around to meet his would-be assailant. He wasn't expecting another fox. "Who... Who are you?"

"Better question: Who are you?" Maria retorted, holding the male's dagger in her right hand to show him that she had control, here.

"I... Mean no harm, Miss... I-I'm James."

"Huh. So, what the hell are you hiding in the bushes with a dagger for?"

"I'd heard someone approach... I thought it was an intruder..." he eyed his dagger in the vixen's hand. "I was simply defending my home..."

"Okay..." Maria relaxed a bit, but not fully. He didn't seem to be very threatening, even if he was half a foot taller than she was. He was reasonably handsome, fairly mild... But she certainly wasn't giving him his dagger back.

"Please, Miss... I mean no harm. Especially not to a lovely vixen such as yourself..." James's tail swished a bit as he uttered the last sentence.

"Was I the intruder?"

"I don't think so... The 'intruder' had much heavier footsteps. I couldn't smell it, though..."

"Hmmm..." Maria sensed an opportunity, here. "I suppose I could take care of your problem... For a fee."

"You will? That would be wonderful."

Maria's stomach growled quite audibly at that moment. "... Sorry." Maria blushed a bit.

"Oh, no worries. You sound hungry, Miss... Would you like to follow me home? I can get you something to eat."

Maria's ears perked a bit at the mention of food. "That would be lovely, James. I'm Maria, by the way."

"Right, Maria... Let's get you fed, then we can discuss payment. Come this way, lovely lady..."

"Uh, right, James..." The fox was becoming just a bit enamored with Maria, and she wasn't quite sure she was comfortable with that... Still, a job's a job, and food is food. And there could be worse individuals to pursue her; all in all, James seemed to be a sweet guy... Well, from what little she knew about him, anyway. Either way, she wasn't worried about him; Maria was convinced that, if James became "rape-y," she could easily dispatch him.

James led Maria through the woods, weaving in between trees and bushes, until they came to a hillside...
