The next morning, you wake up almost looking forward for the day. Megan's family had looked so down about not having her in their lives anymore. You hope that your suggestion to have them think of you as Megan will cause them to cheer up.
You wait for them throughout the day for them to start treating you differently, like if you were Megan. However, that never happens. Instead, as the day passes they continue to treat you like they always had, like when Megan was still alive. As the day ends you realize that they aren't following your suggestion. You decide they are still trying to get used to the situation, and that eventually they will begin treating you like their daughter.
Except two weeks goes by and nothing changes. The family treats you like regular old Alex, like they have been doing ever since they have known you. You manage to keep yourself preoccupied during this time, but you begin to grow frustrated that they have not done what you asked them to do. You notice that they begin to act more and more depressed around the house, even poor little Emily. Eventually, it was decided that Emily should spend a month at her paternal grandparents house just to get her out of that house and away from all of the memories.
You ride along with the family as they take Emily to her grandparents house. After they drop her off, you begin to ride back home. During the ride back you can no longer contain your frustration.
"Listen I've know we've been through a lot" you say with concern "But why haven't you been doing what I've asked you to. I asked you all to treat me just like Megan, and you just treated me like you've always have. You know it would make you feel much better about everything, so why haven't you done that?"
Dawn looks back at you with a sad expression. "Look Alex," she says, "We really appreciate your offer. But we just can't look at you and start treating you like someone else. We've known you for years as Megan's boyfriend, and its hard for us to start looking at you differently."
"Dawn is right," Tony says from behind the wheel "I just can't treat anyone like my little princess. Megan had so many things that made her her-the may she acted, moved, talked-that I just can't take anyone and treat him like Megan."
You see that they are beginning to get upset so you decide to leave the subject alone for now. But you know that Dawn and Tony really need to treat you like their late daughter. You've seen how gloomy they both have gotten, their spark of life is gone. This may be the only way to get it back. You need to do something.
