Helen bent over the first step of the bleacher, lacing his court shoes and getting ready for the game to begin. Coach Allen had said that he wanted to see if he had the potential to try out for Varsity in the summer and Helen intended to see how much potential he really had.
It was getting easier to get lost in being James and living his life. Last night, Helen had stayed up well past midnight with a hand rubbing up and down his new favorite appendage while fantasizing about his next chance to use it on Emily. Deep down, when he thought about it, Helen could remember his life as Helen Range, and even missed parts of that life. But more and more, it was getting harder to remember what about that life would be worth going back to...
"James!" Coach Allen barked from the side line. "Are you going to play today, or are you going to admire your shoes? Because if the shoes are that interesting, I'm sure you can still go out for Varsity... with the cheer leaders."
"I'm in coach," Helen called, running onto the court and getting into place for the jump ball. "I just don't think the rest of these losers are ready for me."
"Put your money where your mouth is," Tod Watkins said from the other side of the line, staring at Helen and waiting for the coach to toss the ball. "Five bucks says you don't pick up more than ten points today."
"Five?" Helen said, smiling back "Make it fun, dollar a point, you beat me, I pay the difference in our scores."
"Deal sucker," Tod said with a smile. "Hope you have deep pockets."
"I don't need to," Helen said as she leaped for the jump ball. The contest had begun, and she didn't intend to lose.
