By this time, Samantha and Derek, my older sister and brother, had come into the room as well.
"If we're from another planet," I asked, "why aren't we there? Why come to Earth?"
"Because of the Throg," Dad said. "They coveted our world's resources, so they came to take them. A fleet of battleships against a peaceful world.
"Ours was the only craft to escape the Throg onslaught, John. All others were captured, the people handed over for what the Throg called 'research'." He shivered. "The Throg's idea of 'researching' other species involves torture and death. They would skin you alive, just to record exactly how long it took you to die. So our ship held the last Oltroxians." He sighed. "I wish you children could have seen Oltrox, before the fall."
"Wait a minute," I said, turning to Sam and Derek. "You guys didn't see our homeworld, either?"
"'Fraid not, little dude," Derek replied.
"The three of us were born on that ship," Sam added.
"We were searching for an uninhabited world," Mom said, "where we could settle, and rebuild our society. If the engine hadn't malfunctioned, we would have continued our quest."
"The last thing we wanted," Dad said, "was to draw Throg attention to another world."
"They wouldn't follow us all this way," I said. "Would they?"
"Remember what Dad said about Throg research?" Derek said. "Oltroxians are quite fascinating."
