You decide the mace would be the best compromise between speed and damage. Grabbing the twisted chunk of iron and a two foot bar, you whistle nonchalantly and begin cutting a groove and notch. If this works, you might be able to crush a mindflayer’s skull before it blasts your brain. Just as long as you get the drop on it and there isn’t a group of them like the first time.
As you work, you pretend that you are crafting a bigger hammer in order to make your job easier, hoping that will fool the squiddies. Still, you can’t help but keep your good eye on both your work and the door, waiting for them to come and punish you a second time for you blatant defiance. Your work is not interrupted and you pound notched end of the bar into the groove and then hammer it closed. Perhaps they didn’t notice or perhaps they bought the deceptive picture in your mind’s eye of using the “bigger hammer” on some of the tougher tasks…
