As Mom tells the story, it happened at a club called Abaddon.
Mom had gone there for some drinks and dancing, but found that one guy there thought she was one of the available amenities. She seemed to be spending half the night trying to get away from his hands.
At one point, he finally decided to start wrapping his arms around her. She struggled, but he was much stronger than she was, and he started carrying her elsewhere.
That's when a baritone voice asked, "Is there any problem here?"
Mom seized the opportunity. "Yes: This guy is a problem. He's been bothering me all night."
The owner of the voice turned to the man. "Is this true?"
Mom fully expected him to deny it. But, once he locked eyes with the baritone, he said, "Yes."
"Then you're going to have to leave," the baritone replied.
Handsy nodded, turned, and walked away.
The baritone turned back to Mom, and she took in the sight of her savior. He was 6', 2", easily. He had black hair and black eyes. He wore a goatee, with a tasteful amount of five o'clock shadow on his cheeks. He wore a black suit with a black shirt, with a red tie and matching pocket square.
"I'm Nick Morgenstern," he said. "I own this club. I hope this hasn't spoiled your whole evening. Your cover, and whatever you spent on food and drink, will be refunded in full."
"Thank you, Mr. Morgenstern," Mom said.
"Nick, please."
"Nick."
They talked for a while at her table, until he invited her to join him in the back of the club. She agreed readily, and they went to his office. They talked for a while longer, then they agreed to have sex.
She went back to Abaddon the next night, but they told her that he didn't come in every night.
Then, she found out she was pregnant.
By the time the mysterious Nick Morgenstern was back in New York, I was born. Mom says he was surprised when he found out, but he graciously offered any assistance she and I might need. Before long, it was agreed that she and I would come up to his penthouse on my birthday from then on.
My father never offered to marry Mom, and I don't think she would have accepted. He was happy for her when she got married to Dr. Gabriel Theodore, a dentist. He made the funniest faces when Poppa introduced himself, saying later that he had known someone with that name. Apparently, they didn't get along, but Daddy and Poppa did.
We all enjoyed our annual visits to Daddy's penthouse, although he did get nervous when I would touch his things. Then, after Mom got married, he got nervous when my stepsister, Elizabeth, touched his things. Then, Mom and Poppa had Jenny, and now it's her turn to make Daddy (or Uncle Nick, as Elizabeth and Jenny call him) nervous.
It was a great time.
Then, on my 16th birthday, Daddy made an announcement that none of us could have expected.
