Chapter #5

Learning what is expected of a werewolf.

by: Scifiwizard Retired Author IconMail Icon
After I had my fill of raw meat, which I later learned was fresh venison, Neoma, Ciaran and Asia escorted me out of the dimly lit cave into what could only be described as an abandoned city. It looked like it had come straight out of a horror novel; I felt as if I had entered a post apocalyptic world.

"This is the town of Lupine." Calmly, Ciaran explained. "It was abandoned and forgotten centuries ago when the entire town vanished literally over night under mysterious circumstances."

"I can probably guess what those circumstances were." Wincing, I said.

Asia nodded. "The midnight forest is protected by a powerful enchantment." Serious, she said. "All those who enter here frequently or wander in too deep are never the same again and often never come back out."

"To the point, you need to understand what is expected of you as a werewolf." Calmly, Neoma said. "First, werewolves live upwards of 1700 to 2100 years unless they are a direct descendant of King Lycan of which they would be near immortal."

"Werewolves, like vampires, are vulnerable to silver." Serious, Ciaran added. "It has the highest conductivity of all other metals and exposure to it disrupts our unnatural healing ability by literally short circuiting it."

"I didn't know about that..." Wincing, I said.

Neoma grinned. "Humans, or cowan as we call them, assume that it is the purity of the metal that wards off the undead." Softly, she said. "Cowan made symbols of their faith have no real power."

"Werewolves quickly and easily overheat in the sunlight." Calmly, Asia said. "You would be wise to sleep during the day and be active at night."

"Do werewolves only eat raw meat?" Worried, I asked.

"We werewolves are hunters by nature." Calmly, Neoma explained. "You could eat cooked meat but it would not have the taste you will find yourself desiring and, nine times out of ten, you would vomit it right back up."

"Rest assured, werewolves rarely eat cowan; they are... an acquired taste." Serious, Ciaran said. "However, you will find yourself sorely tempted to maul one who annoys you."

Asia nodded. "This will be especially true during the days of a full moon." Darkly, she said. "Werewolves lose nearly all of their conscious control while under the influence of a full transformation."

"You will remember what you did after you change back hence we have learned to stay in Lupine during that time." Calmly Neoma said. "We will help you when your first full moon comes in twenty eight days."

"Until then, I suggest you all allow our son to rest." Startling me, a booming voice said.

Everyone turned to find my mom and dad walking up to us...
