Chapter #5

Challenge Accepted

by: Paul M ~ Author IconMail Icon
"It's rule number one of magic," you say. "When a strange man who looks like a combination of you and your crush shows up at your doorstep claiming to be your son from the future and sends you on a quest, you don't not accept. Therefore, I will not do what I shouldn't do and instead do what I shouldn't not do, which is to say, I don't refuse the acceptance of the quest which I refuse to not accept."

"What?" asks Donovan, thoroughly bemused.

"Yes," you say. "Sorry, I don't know what happened there. The shock of this shockingly shocking turn of events these past few minutes shocks me so much it's shocking, but I think I've recovered."

"Good. I recommend heading out immediately. I don't know how much the Megalomaniac has done to protect his future, but if I'm right, he knows I traveled back here and he's laid traps. Needless to say, he'll be after the photo album - he'll want to secure the key from Josh Howards and destroy the Maguffin."

"The Maguffin?"

"The thing in the chest in the future. It's a type of plot device. That's not what matters right now."

"So we head out now."

"Exactly. First, of course, we'll need to convince Mom to join up with us. It won't be easy, since she always seems to have some social engagement, but if you manage to become her boyfriend within the span of the next 48 hours without mentioning me, we can all set off together."

"That's acceptable," you say, even though it's something you were probably going to do anyways. "Wait, why the arbitrary rules?"

"They're not arbitrary at all. You only have 48 hours because the clock is ticking and the candies will only take to new users during that time period. You can't mention me - or at least say who I am - because that will jinx the mission. Literally. If someone knows about a future event which directly springs from a future socioempathic connection, it greatly reduces the odds that said socioempathic connection will occur."

"I think I understood some of that," you lie.

"Good. Now go get that girl."

"On it."

There are several ways to go about this feat. Which will you choose?
