After some deliberation, you decide that Penelope probably knows best. Besides, joining a club has got to be orders of magnitude easier to accomplish than navigating the minefield of high-school girl-drama. All you have to do is put your name on the form and show up to a few meetings, right?
Unfortunately, even that doesn't prove to be quite as straightforward as you'd hoped. Popping into an Internet Café to check your school's website, you find to your dismay that most of the groups aren't even accepting new members this late in the year. All of your first choices—like film club, computer club, and gaming club—fall into this category. Even of those that are accepting new members, most are still impossibilities for one reason or another. Spanish club is accepting members, but Penelope only took Latin and you can barely master English. The Marching Band is taking on new members, but only those proficient in the trombone. Military Drill Team is actively recruiting but—oh, irony—only accepts guys. In fact, out of nearly sixty organizations, there are only two that are both still recruiting and might actually accept you.
One is the Model United Nations. You don't know a thing about international politics, or indeed even exactly what the Model United Nations does, but they're open to anyone. How hard could it be?
The other choice is Drama Club. While auditions for the school play are technically over, they're still accepting any girls who want to participate. For that, you can thank Ashton. With her lustrous red hair and silky soprano voice honed by years of vocal training, she's had the female lead in every single school production for the past three years. These days, so few girls even bother auditioning that Mr. Michaels—the theater director—usually has to either cut or combine several minor female roles. Of course, there's never any shortage of male actors competing to act opposite Ashton—a few out of genuine passion for the theater but most probably enticed by the prospect of long evenings alone in a rehearsal room with Ashton.
Neither sounds like much fun, but you should be able to suffer through, given the circumstances.
