Chapter #5Protecting the captain by: Yote In his office, Captain Sisko listened intently as Odo delivered his report. Security could confirmed that a Changeling was indeed on board. Not long after the transporter intrusion, an Ensign on one of the lower decks was attacked by an amorphous silvery blob. He had awoken to find his phaser stolen and a medical examination determined much of his blood had been drained.
"Drained?" Sisko roared at this information. "Odo, I thought we were dealing with a Changeling, not a vampire!"
Odo inclined his head. "Evidently the Great Link had learned of our method of detecting Changelings by a sample of blood. Most likely they have learned to incorporate human blood into themselves, which they can use to throw of the test."
Captain Sisko's muttered darkly. "They how on earth are we supposed to weed out this intruder?! It could be anyone on this ship by now! And I can hardly keep us on lockdown for much longer. There are entire fleets out there waiting to dock, not to mention every shopkeeper on the promenade is bleeping me every five seconds, complaining about lost custom!"
"My men are working on it," Odo said.
"They need to work faster," Sisko said tersely.
Odo inclined an eyebrow ever so slightly, the only show of emotion sofar on his otherwise expressionless face. He didn't enjoy having his competency questioned, though he knew the ongoing war against the dominion was starting to fray the Captain's composure. "Well, we do have one lead."
"Go on..."
"It stole a phaser. Changelings have no need for such a weapon, being capable of shapeshifting into a number of offensive designs for close range, which suggests it is intending to attack somebody at long range... An assassin," Odo said, with a backwards glance towards the door.
It didn't take long for the Captain to pick up on his intent. "You think it has come here to kill me." Suddenly his face split into a grin. "Why, that's fantastic news!"
"It is, Captain?"
"Of course. You can use me as bait! We'll go for a walk down the promenade, and as soon as it jumps out to attack, we'll beam it into a cell!"
Odo winced at such a terrible security arrangement. "Such a plan would be extremely dangerous."
"Not with my chief of security by my side."
"Sir, do you really think an assassin is going to attack if he can see me with you?"
"Ah, but he won't see you," Sisko winked. "What he will see is my..." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
