“OK, but only for a minute or two.” You move to one side to let her pass, and she enters the house. You direct her into the sitting room, and push the front door closed. “Just sit yourself down there for a second – I’ll be right with you…”
You take a diversion via the kitchen, grab a pair of shorts and a tee-shirt from the laundry pile, and pull these on whilst making your way back to the sitting room. At least you now feel a little more respectably dressed to face a young teenager than just a towel.
“OK, so you have a questionnaire then?”
“Oh yes!!! I would really appreciate you answering some questions for me!!!”
Talk about excited. She’s acting like a child at Christmas who’s just seen Santa climb down the chimney. She’s perched right on the front edge of her chair, and her eyes seem enormous, looking around examining everything, and now staring straight at you.
“OK, so do you have a name then?” you ask
“Oh sorry, yes of course. I’m Naomi Spencer.”
“OK Naomi. I’m Daniel… Danny…. Fire away.”
“Pardon?”
“With the questionnaire.”
“Oh, yes. I’m sorry. Right... um.. OK. “Are you male or female?”
“I was male last time I looked…” you joke. “I can check again if you want…?”
“Yes please! Oh, no sorry. I didn’t mean that… No of course not.” Now Naomi has starting turning bright red on her cheeks. “Next question… how old are you? 12 – 14, 15 – 17, over 18.”
“Definitely over 18.” You respond, trying not to embarrass her again.”
“Question number three,” Naomi continues..”What type of media do you use most? Um, the choices are newspapers and magazines, radio, internet or Television.”
“OK, that would be the internet. Amazing what you can find on the internet.” Oh grief, she’s blushing again, and you hadn’t even realized you’d said anything.
“What programs do you watch most on TV? -Action Drama /Soaps / Films / Documentaries Cartoons?”
“On TV – well guess it would have to be films then.”
“Do you agree that the Media still portrays men as dominant to women?” Oh, getting a bit deep now, eh?
“Not in some of the films I’ve seen, no. Some of those women have been pretty dominant!”
Naomi raises her eyebrows at this answer. She seems to be finding it increasingly difficult keeping her concentration on the questionnaire.
“Question six?” you prompt…
Naomi regains her focus…
