Chapter #4

And Ember's story begins.

Dark clouds loomed above the city known as Warfang. Lightning split the sky, followed by the rumble of thunder somewhere in the distance. Ember ran down the cobbled street, hoping that she wouldn't be caught in the heavy downpour, a satchel filled with special herbs for the infirmary, where she worked, bouncing against her flank.

Flame, her husband, was probably worried sick about her. She was away from home this whole afternoons, but she didn't have a choice; finding the things that the infirmary at the temple demanded weren't a easy task.

Fat drops of water began to plummet from the sky. By the time Ember reached her house, a round stone structure, she was, unfortunately, soaking wet from the rain.

She hammered on the front door and it opened up almost instantly, revealing a very relieved Flame on the other side.

"Thank goodness you're home, Ember!" he exclaimed, stepping aside and allowing his pink mate to enter the house. "I was tempted to go out and look for you. Are you alright?"

"I'm fine, Flame," she said, grabbing a nearby towel and wiping herself dry, "Just a little wet, that's all."

Flame smiled. "Great to hear that," he said, "Are you hungry? I made dinner."

Ember attempted to answer, but a yawn escaped her mouth. She didn't know why but she felt quite tired today. Even though it was early in the evening, Ember felt sleepy.

"Not really, dear," she said, "I feel tired. I think I'll go to bed early tonight."

Flame gave a nod, looking a little disappointed. "Alright," he said.

Ember flopped down on her bed, sprawling out on the soft mattress. Gazing out her window she watched the rain fall, lite briefly by a bolt of lightning. Her eyes began to close and soon she was fast asleep.
