Chapter #8

Of course Mr. Jaspers knows about the purple pa...

    by: Unknown
Oh my God. This is so not happening to me, Carol thinks. This is all some sort of bizarre nightmare, yeah, that's it. Soon she will wake up and none of this will have happened. But Mr. Jaspers is still standing there, gazing down at the hollow book. She can practically see the purple color of the panties reflecting in the man's eyes. Finally, after what feels like forever, he speaks.

"You... you still want to purchase this item, Miss?" The man closes his eyes. He knows of the object. Knows that it is powerful and in some ways inescapable. If the girl found the purple panties, well, one way or another she would have taken them home with her. For a brief moment the shop-owner is rather impressed the young woman had the courage to even bring them to the counter at all.

"What? You mean those!?," Carole says, wrinkling her nose. "I didn't know there was anything inside that book...," she lied. Badly.

Mr. Jaspers just stood there and stared at her. His glance melted her resolve.

"Okay, alright. You got me. I found this book and accidentally opened it up and there they were, those...," Carol had trouble saying the words out loud.

"Purple panties?," Mr. Jaspers said, in his dry monotone. Those words sounded so odd coming from him. He should have been quoting Homeric hymns or lines from Hemingway or Proust.

Carol looked to the floor, at her beat-up Converse all-stars. "Yeah, the purple panties." She stood there for a while waiting for the man to yell at her. To spray his verbal disgust all over her brown bangs. But he didn't. Mr. Jaspers knew better. He did, however, extend both hands. One with Carol's change and the other with the book in a brown paper bag. Carol looked up with surprise.

"You don't think... too poorly of me, do you Mr. Jaspers?," Carol said, taking the change and the book and securing both in her bag.

"Miss, there are some things in life that just happen. I could no more stop this transaction from occurring than I could read one page of that Harold Potter or whatever that infernal series is called. I must warn you that those are no ordinary pair of women's undergarments, but then again I imagine you already know that, don't you?," Mr. Jaspers said solemnly.

"They are so... pretty," Carol found herself saying stupidly. All of the adjectives in the world and I use 'pretty?' she thinks.

"Yes, well, so they are."

"Mr. Jaspers, you know more than you are saying," Carol said.

"Even if I did there is nothing I could tell you that you would either believe or heed. This is one of those things where you're completely on your own. Have a good life, Miss," Mr. Jaspers said, before disappearing into a back room. And just like that he was gone.

Carol wanted to call out but didn't. She exited the store into the light rain. Her free lunch period would soon be ending and school beckoned. The store was only a few blocks away. Would she stow the brown paper bag and it's contents in her locker or would she duck into her car and change into the panties right there in the parking lot?
