Jim spent the next week silently fuming at Logan over his defeat but holding a grudge just didn't feel right. He wasn't a jerk, or at least didn't think he was one, and good sportsmanship is something his coaches all throughout his baseball career had instilled in him, so he had to let this go. But he couldn't.
He'd gotten so used to winning at everything that this loss, as minor as it was, was unacceptable. He needed revenge! Or did he?
Logan wasn't a bad guy. He was the big, silent type so many didn't know much about him other than that he loved baseball and could be competitive. Maybe this was wasn't a loss but a chance to get to know his teammate better? Yeah, I like that better. He thought.
Pulling out the team roster, he found Logan's number. It rang three times before Logan picked up.
"Hey, Logan. It's Jim. Did you want to get something to eat?" "Jim? How'd you get my number?"
"I have the team roster because I'm the captain, remember?" "Oh, right. You've never called me before."
"I know. I figured I should get to know the other guys on the team outside baseball now that the season's over and we have time." "You're upset at losing that eating contest, aren't you?"
Jim lost his words. "Oh, um, was it that obvious?" "That, and the others warned me you weren't used to losing."
"Right." "I'm fine with a rematch. How about tomorrow at the same buffet? Just the two of us?"
"Sounds good to me." "Could we do this every few days actually? I'm trying to bulk up for football."
"Oh, um, sure. Sounds good. We can push each other then." "Sounds good. See you tomorrow at 7 then. We can make plans for future contests then."
"Sounds good. See you then."
With plans set, they hung up.
"What have I gotten myself into? Well, I guess it's a good thing I have a high metabolism." With that, he plopped onto his bed to watch TV for a bit.
