Nick felt a pulse of warmth from the rock in his hand, and dismissed it. However, as the general conversation continued, he wondered some more about mermaid.
There was a subtle change in the tone, and his friends behaviour. Patrick scanned the horizon, as if genuinely expecting to see a mermaid. While Carlos was telling a rambling story, about mermaids, and a near encounter he'd had as a kid. It felt like a joke... but came without a punchline. Just kinda ... trailing out. Allan was quiet as if short on mermaid anecdotes.
Suspecting his friends were pranking him, and knew about his unspoken wish, he stayed silent refusing to rise to the bait.

"There... There!"
With a shout and an excitedly shaking pointed finger, Patrick was pointing to a figure on the beach. She was hard to make out at first, pale and blonde on the golden beach, the surf turning white as it splashed over her legs. But, as the water drew back... her tail was visible... she didn't have legs.
More sure than ever he was being pranked, Nick's lips tightened, his expression stiff refusing to believe his eyes. But all his friends were reacting as if it were real. That seeing a mermaid was possible... was happening.
