You'd taken a year out from your university studies to travel the world, and as you toured the Pacific Rim you found your money running low, in Tokyo.
You hadn't realised how expensive Tokyo was for the cost of living. But it was such a busy and vibrant place, that you decided to try and stay for a few months. The chance to improve your Japanese was also tempting. Although you can muddle your way through a simple conversation, you want, you need to improve your language skills.
So here you are turning up for work, for the first day, working as the Takahashi company's American Liaison.
Taking a deep breath you pass some secretaries on the steps outside. While they aren't terribly overladen with curves, they are still wearing some marvellously tight, and smart clothes.
You put on your best suit, and headed up to the fifteenth floor. Checking your introduction package, you see that Miss Tanaka is your immediate boss, and there's a picture of stern looking woman paperclipped to the top of that sheet of paper.
As the elevator door pings, and opens you see your new boss. Introducing yourself, in your best if rather stilted Japanese you give her a deep bow.
"Robin-kun?"
Standing up straight again, you confirm that you are Robin Whittaker.
"But isn't Robin... a girl's name?" she asks. She has a strong accent, but speech is still clear.
"It can be either for a man or a woman." you explain.
She accepts this with a curt nod, but she doesn't look very happy, as she leads you to your position. As you walk, you nod and smile to everyone you pass. As the big, coarse gaijin, you draw everyone's eye, as you tower over Miss Tanaka by about a foot.
It looks like you're the only non-Japanese on this floor, and as Miss Tanaka points to your seat, you realise you're also the only man, too.
