This choice: John and Robin are brought on stage • Go Back...
John and Robin watched the show with amused smiles. They spoke in quiet tones back and forth about how impressed they were with the actors who were pretending to be hypnotized. They pulled off looking like average audience members so well, if Robin and John didn't know hypnosis was fake, they might have thought they weren't actors at all. Now, knowing that it wasn't real didn't take away from the fun.
"Hey, Robin," John turned to his friend.
"Yeah, bro?" Robin asked.
"Thanks for tonight," John said while Robin smiled back at his friend.
They were interrupted from their thoughts when by the hypnotist, Drake Bloodstone's voice and they suddenly realized that he was looking down at them. He pointed down in their direction causing them to look back and forth at each other.
"You there, please come up here. Yes, both of you, the blond and brunette," Bloodstone confirmed.
Robin and John looked at each other again before heading on stage laughing, nervous to see what would happen to them. Bloodstone shook their hands.
Bloodstone asked their names and John introduced himself with a big goofy smile while Robin did the same while staring at his feet. Bloodstone then guided them both to chairs that were on stage.
Bloodstone puts John and Robin under before he puts them through their paces, having them both do some funny behaviors. At one point he had John think he was participating in a bodybuilding competition and while he flexed, Robin was made to think he was a model walking the catwalk. The audience applauded and laughed, enjoying the pair's performance until Bloodstone had them sit down and put back into their trance.
"Did you come here together?" He asked them both.
"Yes. I bought us tickets for tonight because he was feeling down," Robin said.
"That's very kind," Bloodstone told the audience.
"John is my best friend and the best person I know," Robin said honestly
"That's very nice. So, tell me, how long have you two been dating?" he asked.
"We...we haven't," John said confused.
"Oh, so this is your first date. You're a sweet girl," He said to Robin before turning to John, "and you are a lucky guy that she asked you out."
Neither of them said anything, instead, they just listened to what Bloodstone had said. This was their first date and John was a lucky guy for Robin to ask him out. It didn't make sense to them, their minds stalled as they tried to sort it out, their heads hurting trying to rationalize what Bloodstone told them...that Robin was a sweet girl.
"My wife and I were best friends, too. The person you marry should be your best friend. Now, I don't mean to rush things, it's just something you should remember," he tells them, and that information is filed away.
Bloodstone looked down at the couple and assessed them. Robin was a small thing, made all the smaller by her baggy clothes. Clearly, she lacked self-confidence and probably had issues with body image. John was a good-looking guy and must really think highly of her, so there must be something really special about her. They were such good sports, he decided to help set this relationship up for success.
Bloodstone turned fully to the audience while John and Robin wrestled with the information they were given. They sorted through it as best They could but their minds had to do mental gymnastics to make it happen. Before they came there it had been obvious that Robin was a guy but he realized now that they couldn't say with one hundred percent certainty that Robin wasn't a sweet girl. That was crazy, though, wasn't it? They decided that They would just focus on the facts to use as an anchor.
Fact: Robin is a sweet girl
Fact: Robin asked John out on a date
Fact: John agreed to the date
Fact: They were having a great time together
Fact: They are best friends
Fact: The person they will marry should be their best friend
That all made sense to John. He had known Robin all of his life and he couldn't remember a time when they weren't best friends. With that in mind, it's not hard to understand why they decided to give dating a shot. He was concerned about hurting his friendship with her but she clearly wanted to give being his girlfriend a shot. Even with those concerns of his, he couldn't stop envisioning her walking down the aisle in a beautiful wedding dress. She would make the perfect wife, after all. Robin, however, was having a harder time wrapping his head around it. It was causing him a lot of discomfort to try to force it all to feel correct. His mind whirled as Bloodstone addressed the audience.
Bloodstone was in midsentence when he suddenly froze before he collapsed on stage. There were murmurs from the audience as the stage crew came running but John and Robin just sat in place. An ambulance was called and the audience was ushered out, including John and Robin who were suddenly aware that they were standing outside.
