Despite all of Hermione's warnings about the book, Harry was still fascinated by the possibilities offered to him by the old, used textbook once belonging to the Half-Blood Prince. For the last few days, he'd been focusing on a page that clearly had some kind of scrawled advice, but it looked as if a pot of ink had been dumped only on that spot on that page, leaving whatever was once there illegible. There were obviously magical ways around that, but Harry didn't know what they were, and if he'd told Hermione what he wanted to use the spell for, she'd never tell him.
It was from that logic that, while writing essays in the library with Hermione and Ron, Harry 'accidentally' spilled ink all over his transfiguration textbook. "Oh no!" he said in an effort to appear shocked. "My book's ruined now!" Putting his meager acting skills to their limit, Harry looked at Hermione and said, "Normally I wouldn't mind, but I need this to actually study for the upcoming exam if I want to be an Auror. Do you know a spell to get rid of spilled ink like that?"
Sure enough, Hermione taught him the spell, and later that night, with the rest of his dormitory asleep, Harry used the spell to clear up the spot in his potions book, revealing a new piece of information written in a spidery scrawl. "For improving one's love life," followed by one of the Prince's invented spells.
