Dark Secrets

The absurdity of the situation aside, I figured the least I could do was put Maddie's mind at ease.
"If our parents truly are international slave traders, then we need to do something about it." I tried to keep my voice serious, but I couldn't help but smirk on the inside. My parents? Kidnappers for criminal clients? I couldn't believe it for a second.
But Maddie smiled ever so slightly. While she had been a long-time friend of mine, I couldn't help but feel a tingle when I saw her smile. Perhaps this situation could be used to bond with her?
"Okay," she said, interrupting my train of thought. "This ledger is the only evidence we have, but we need more. We need to break into one of these 'holding facilities' and see if there's something there." She pointed a delicate finger to one address on the page. "This is the closest one. It seems to be a dockside warehouse."
I nodded. "Alright. Let's check it out," I grinned, somewhat more light-hearted than I intended.
Maddie paused, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "The most important thing we can do is act like nothing has changed. If our parents suspect we're onto them, we're in deep trouble."
A disturbing thought appeared in my brain. Was it possible the ledger wasn't fake? Was it possible that both of our parents were into some serious criminal activity? The silliness of it aside, I felt myself deeply conflicted. Should I turn in my own flesh and blood, even if the crimes were true? Would I be able to live with myself knowing that I sent my parents to prison?
I shook my head clear of thoughts. It couldn't possibly be true, and I'll prove it to Maddie by going to one of the supposed 'holding facilities.'
We began to leave the basement, when we heard a curious sound...
