“Special Agent Kevin Sharp, it is a pleasure to meet you,” says your boss, Johnathan Alexander.
“Special Agent, sir?” you reply.
“Get used to it, or better yet, don’t. Shut the door behind you please, since everything I am about to say is highly classified.”
You slowly shut the door, until you hear a ‘click’.
“Kevin, why did you become an FBI agent?”
“Because I want to serve and protect my country sir.”
“Yes, we’ve all know the spiel, but I want to hear you say the real reason.”
You know what he wants to hear, and even though it brings up painful memories, you admit to the truth. “Because of my family’s murder, sir.”
“Drop the sir, this is all off the record. Your family was slaughtered, and you were sent to live with your grandmother, who died while you were attending university. You have no siblings or cousins or aunts or uncles, correct?”
“None that I am aware of sir.”
“You had the highest grades of any of your class members, and at your current age of 27, you are heavily being considered for a promotion to head of your department.”
“Thank you.”
“But it seems that even though you are young handsome, and successful, you are currently single, correct?”
“Correct sir.”
“Why?”
“Because I dedicate myself completely to my work sir.”
“There’s that standard answer again. The real reason for your solitude is that you’re afraid to be hurt again!”
“What?”
“Your parents died when you were eight years old, your grandmother died when you were twenty-one years old. Everyone you ever really loved is dead.”
“I don’t see what this has to do with anything John,” you say, using a short form of his first name to hint at some disrespect for his line of reasoning here.
“It means that mentally and socially, you are the perfect candidate to go undercover, and I want to add you to a new department that was just put together last month. This department is top secret, only 20 people outside of the President even know of its existence, and we want you to be the top agent there.”
“We?”
“Kevin, come with me to my car, and I’ll drive you there myself, we are doing advancements in the scientific field that are decades above what anyone thinks our capabilities are. If you accept this offer, there is no going back.”
“I understand John.”
“Then what is your answer?”
