"Hi... Mom," said Mom.
"Hi... David," I replied.
As my new son stood right next to me, I was once again reminded of how short I was: even in high heels, I was a few inches shorter than him. Of course, that was nothing compared to the strangeness of seeing my own body from the outside, acting on its own, only to the look down and see a pair of breasts on my own chest. The whole experience was simply surreal. And I could tell that Mom was feeling the same.
"Before we can continue, I need to ask you a few questions," said Larry.
He proceeded to run Mom through the same quiz I'd just been through. Her answers were mostly the same as mine. Once they were done, Larry and Gloria looked at each other, a grin forming on both of their faces.
"Everything is in order," he excitedly said. "Both of them have successfully been transferred into the other's body."
"Meaning that... the experiment is a success!" Gloria replied.
Gloria jumped at Larry, hugging him. Both of them had a huge smile on their faces. They finally calmed down after a minute or so.
"We did it!" said Larry. "We have officially performed the first human brain transfer."
"Just thinking of the impact this will have on the world... It's amazing!" added Gloria.
"Hold on... what impact?" I asked. "I thought this was just a one time experiment. You know, just to prove you could do it."
"It's much more than that, Elizabeth." Larry explained, "we could make this public. Make it available to everyone. Just picture a world where everybody could be who they want to be."
"Of course, that's still a while away," Gloria said. "It'll take years before we can make this a reality, with all the legal issues that will inevitably arise. But still: we've done it. It's just a matter of time now."
I had to admit, their dream was a noble one. The world is full of people who wish they were someone else, and that now there was a chance that their wish could be granted. What had happened today might change the world for the better. This idea made me feel better: I may be stuck as my mother, but at least it was for a good cause.
"Well, I'm happy I could help," said Mom, echoing my feelings.
"And we're very thankful to you two." Larry paused, then added, "by the way, I'll be hosting a party at my house tomorrow night, to celebrate our accomplishment. I'd understand if you'd rather stay home, but it wouldn't feel right not to invite you. You two, and your family, are more than welcome."
"We'll think about it," I answered.
Mom and I left soon after. As we walked out of the building, I realized something: I'd have to drive. The two of us had come alone, since we assumed the procedure might take a long time. Indeed, we'd been out for several hours, as it was getting dark; it was morning when we came here. But now, it was just the two of us, and Mom didn't have a license anymore: I'd started studying for it, so I knew most of the theory, but I'd never actually driven a car.
When we reached the vehicle, Mom looked at me, and her eyes sent a clear message: you drive. Fumbling through my purse, I found the car keys and got in the car. Of course, the seat was perfectly adjusted to my new height. It felt a bit weird, however, when I put on my seatbelt, only to have it pass between my breasts. Trying to ignore that feeling, I unlocked the passenger door, letting Mom in. Then, I started the car... and I started driving. It was perfectly intuitive, as if I'd been doing it for years.
Wasn't driving one of the things Larry said stayed with the body? It looked that way. And driving felt great. I started thinking of the possibilities: not only did I know how to drive, I also had my own car. I was an adult, too. I could go anywhere I wanted, do whatever I wanted. But right now, what I wanted was to go home.
The drive home wasn't too long. After parking the car, Mom and I got out, and we stood in front of the front door. We were both reluctant to open it. After all, once we set foot in this house, our whole family would come to greet us, seeing us in each other's body. I'd have to meet my husband and children, while Mom would have to meet her sisters and father. In the end, she was braver than me, and pushed the door open.
Of course, everyone was standing there in anticipation. They'd heard the car, and they wanted to see us. Dad was the first to talk.
"Did it work?" he asked. Mom and I nodded.
"I can't believe this," said Cassie. "It's really you in there, David?"
"Yeah. It's me."
Amelia just stood there, staring at us. Then, she got tired of it, and just went back to her room. I guess even a body swap wasn't important to her. If it didn't affect her personally, she couldn't be bothered with it. For a moment, I wished I'd swapped with her. That would show her...
Melody ran to me and hugged me. "Awe you weawy David?" she asked.
"Yeah, that's right kiddo. I'm David."
"You awe Mommy now," she said, giggling. "Can I caw you Mommy?"
That took my by surprise. Was she really going to just accept me as her new mother? Then again, she was perfectly aware of who I really was. It felt more like she was teasing me. Like she thought this situation was funny. Still, I figured it made sense: I was technically her mother now.
"Yeah, I guess," I said, reluctantly. "But you have to do what Mommy says. And Mommy says it's time for you to go to bed."
"But I don wanna!"
"Melody, do as your mother says," commanded Phillip.
Pouting, Melody went back to her room. To be fair, it really was her bedtime, but that wasn't why I said that.
"Well, now we can talk," I said. "So, what do we do now?"
"We follow the plan," answered Dad. "You two get used to each other's lives. We pretend nothing has changed when in public. Other than that, you can do whatever you want."
"What about tonight? We haven't really thought about that, but it's gonna be really weird!" I added.
"You and I are married now," Dad said. "We'll sleep in the same bed. And I mean actual sleep; we won't do anything more than that."
"Alright, I guess I can live with that."
"Uh, David, can you come with me?" Cassie asked. "I gotta talk to you."
She grabbed my arm and dragged me to our bedroom. The one that wasn't mine anymore.
"So... what do you want to talk about?"
"Nothing," she said. "But I think Mom wanted some time alone with Dad. It was getting pretty obvious."
Of course, I hadn't noticed. I'd been completely oblivious to Mom for the entire conversation.
"But we can still talk," Cassie added. "So, what does it feel like? Being Mom, I mean."
"Well..."
I started explaining all the minor differences I felt to Cassie, which took a while. At some point, she decided to change the subject, talking instead about what we'd do the next day. We planned to have Stephen and Laura come over so they could meet the new me. I hated to think that, but we wouldn't spend as much time together now. However, that didn't mean I'd stop being their friend. Also, Mom would have to get to know them, since they'd be spending a lot more time together. Things would definitely change. | Members who added to this interactive story also contributed to these: |
