My mother finally broke the silence, "Are you really sure you'd be OK being a boy, Melody?"
"Uh-huh!" Melody nodded enthusiastically. "I wanna be gwowed up even if I hafta be a boy!"
I started to protest again but mom shushed me, "Just let your father and me think about this for a moment."
Mom and dad went off to talk in the other room as I sat there, shocked that they were taking this seriously. Amelia looked rather like a football fan watching his favorite team line up to kick a 45-yard field goal to win with only 1 second left on the clock. Optimistic, but definitely tense. Melody, on the other hand, was bouncing around like she'd been told she might get a pony for Christmas. The only real consolation was that Cassandra seemed to be as surprised as I was that our parents were considering this. She and I just stared at each other as I tried to process the possibility of being four-year-old Melody. The idea of being Amelia was bad enough, but to have to live as a four-year-old again?
I was still going over things in my head when mom and dad came back into the room.
"Your mother and I have given this a lot of thought and we've decided to be good parents for once in this story and that it is a bad idea to let a 4 year girl swap bodies with a 16 year old"
I gave a sigh of relief
Amelia's mouths words but nothing coherent comes out.
"Awww, I whnna be griwn up!" Melody said before Amelia could muster up words of despair.
"And miss all your good years?" Dad said "You will be a teenage girl soon enough"
Melody gave a pouty face "Wnna beh Grnup new!
"What about your friends?" Said Cassandra "it would be kind of awkward if you were a 16 year old boy."
"I ges yu right" Melody said reluctantly.
"Good, now that we got that settled." Dad continued "We have also decided that forcing David to swap with Amelia is unfair"
"So... We have decided to let David choose between which of his other two sisters he swaps with" Mom finishes
"Me...?" I said hesitantly noticing both the fact that Cassandra had gone pale and the hopeful spark in Amelia's eyes.
"Yes" Both father and mother said in unison, Father continues "We have decided this is best for everyone this way, whatever you choose will be the final decision".
I gulp, any other day I would of chosen Cassandra right off the bat. But the look of sheer look of shock and terror on her face made him hesitate, On the other hand Amelia's eyes pleading with me not to pick her for once in my life actually made me feel sympathetic towards her. After a few seconds that felt like hours you choose...
