Back in the darkened bedroom, Gardevoir sighed in her sleep as she finished a rather pleasant dream indeed. It was mostly nonsense, but Gardevoir remembered having a nice time while she dreamt. Absently, she patted the space next to her in an unconscious moment of extra comforting to the sleeping child beside her...
T-The sleeping child beside... beside her...
The sleeping child was neither sleeping nor beside her. There was nobody next to Gardevoir, where she knew she had last left a sleeping child there. All that she could feel beside her was Ki-Ki's little pacifier she'd been sucking on when she fell asleep.
Instantly, the pokemon sat straight up in bed, searching the room. She couldn't feel Kirlia's presence in the room anywhere. Had she gone to the bathroom? All by herself?
Gardevoir got up out of the bed, pushing aside the warm covers as she began to cross the distance of the room, looking for traces of the human child. Where had she gone, and at this hour of the night?
"*Kirlia*?" The Gardevoir called out, gently so as not to rouse the sleeping pokemon throughout the house. "*Kirlia*?!"
Meanwhile, Kirlia was nearly passing the hedge maze she'd gone into earlier that day; boy, THAT had been a mistake. She made a point to steer clear of the entrance as she kept walking towards the bright lights in the distance.
A sudden breeze ran a chill up her spine unexpectedly as she toddled towards the main roads. On the edge of her hearing, she thought she heard some kind of giggling. She turned around, but saw nothing.
There it was again, still behind her. She turned around in a full 360*, but didn't see anything in sight.
"He-Hewwo?" she called out, her childish voice lisping her words. "Is somewon thewe?"
More laughter. But this time it sounded less like giggles, more like a chuckle. Another shiver ran up her spine.
Kirlia opted to just keep walking towards the lights in the distance, when she swear she felt something pat her on the back. She whirled around, and saw nothing. What was going on??
Gardevoir hadn't found Kirlia in the bathroom; where had that child run off to? Did she think this was a game, so late at night? Gardevoir was looking around darkened corners and trying to sense where Kirlia might be in the house; as she narrowed the options down further and further, she began to get worried. Kirlia... was still in the house, right?
Of course she was, there was no way a little girl like ehr would be able to open the huge door. Even Gardevoir had had a little tough work cut out for her as she had tried to open it earlier, but her abilities were strong and allowed her passage.
Gardevoir began to return to the bedroom, thinking perhaps Kirlia may have returned to the bed by now, when she felt a slight breeze on her back. She was indoors, there shouldn't have been a breeze.
The Gardevoir turned, and gasped in horror as she saw a sight she feared; a chair, pushed up against an open window. Kirlia had gone outside. Gardevoir reacted almost immediately, rushing to the great huge doors and throwing them open like they weighed nothing.
Kirlia circled around and around as she kept feeling something getting closer, but it was always behind her. She never could see whatever it was, but she got the creepy feeling of being watched. Something was wrong. She probably needed to get out of here. She turned to start heading back towards the city lights in the distance...
...and came face to face with a Gengar, smiling maliciously.
Kirlia screamed in fright as she fell backwards onto her padded rear, the unexpected initial shock alone enough to make her wet herself again. The Gengar took a step forward, reaching out a clawed hand towards Kirlia as it grinned at her with those incredibly sharp-looking teeth.
Kirlia scrunched her eyes shut for a moment, curling up in a ball of fear like she had earlier; she had never been good with Ghost-type pokemon--she had always been too afraid of them. And they sensed that fear, and fed off it to build up their energy more. She'd never met a Ghost-type pokemon who hadn't tried to scare her at least a little. The Gengar knew what he was doing would frighten her, and it was working beautifully. Kirlia didn't want to die like this.
She waited for the worst, but suddenly, she heard a voice suddenly ring out. And that voice sounded mad.
"GAR. DE. VOIR!!" Came an honestly terrifyingly fierce shout as a ball of pure black energy whizzed over Kirlia's head, striking the Gengar squarely in the center of his chest. With a pained shriek, he was sucked into the black orb of darkness, which sucked in everything around it for only a few seconds, before it suddenly shut off, taking the Gengar with it, wherever it had gone. A small black hole. There was likely only one type of pokemon who would summon such a thing on something so common.
Kirlia looked over at her savior with a trembling lip. The Gardevoir looked almost furious, and Kirlia could honestly say that she didn't know which she was more scared of; the Gengar that had almost threatened her life, or the Gardevoir who looked ready to give her a scolding to remember. Slowly, the Gardevoir approached Kirlia, who still sat on the ground in her little sleeper, staring up at the psychic/fairy pokemon. Kirlia was trying to stay strong, but the fear and adrenaline that had taken hold of her was a little overwhelming, to say the least. She was so small now, and while even as a tenage boy she would've been worried about a Gengar, she doubted that it would've been able to do nearly as much damage as it could do to her now. She was vulnerable, in more ways than one. And now, looking up at the Gardevoir that stood over her with her arms crossed, Kirlia couldn't stand it much more. She immediately began breaking down, crying loudly as she clutched at the Gardevoir's legs.
Gardevoir let Kirlia cry by herself for a few seconds, before she bent down and picked up the little child in her arms. As soon as Kirlia was in her arms, the child wrapped her little arms around Gardevoir's neck and continued to bawl, shaking with fear. Though Gardevoir was justly angry, she couldn't help but also feel pity again for this child. For now, though, she didn't say anything as she carried Kirlia back into the mansion, holding the child's head to her shoulder.
Kirlia was sobbing in remorse for sneaking out, in relief that the Gardevoir who had treated her so kindly so far had come to her rescue, and in regret that she'd almost tried to betray this kind Gardevoir by leaving without even letting her know. It was all she could do to cry and hug the Gardevoir for forgiveness as the pokemon carried her back to the bed they had been sleeping in minutes before. With minimal effort, the Gardevoir had gotten back into her previous position, holding Kirlia close as they laid in the bed together. Kirlia didn't seem to want to let go of the Gardevoir as she hiccuped and sobbed to herself, despite what comfort the Gardevoir was trying to give Kirlia. Gardevoir picked up the dropped pacifier, cleaned some of the spit off the rubber nipple, and offered it back to Kirlia to try and help soothe her again. Kirlia didn't try to fight as she took the pacifier, sucking hard as she tried to calm herself down. Gardevoir shifted a little so that she was laying on her back, with Kirlia resting on top of her. She pat Kirlia on the back repeatedly as the child kept hiccuping and sobbing, clinging to Gardevoir's neck as she slowly but surely began to fall asleep again. Despite the intensely difficult language barrier erected between the two species, both parties knew that Gardevoir was going to have a TALK with Kirlia tomorrow morning, and that those things definitely would NOT be fun for Kirlia. But for the meantime, the child had already fallen asleep, still clutching Gardevoir in a tight hug, and Gardevoir made sure that if Kirlia tried to leave again, she'd know before the child had even gotten a few steps away from the base of the bed.
