As Amanda stood where she was told, wondering what was going on, she started to notice the world getting bigger. Slow at first and then faster and faster, the room got wider, people taller, and her clothes looser. Amanda grabbed onto her jeans and shirt as she felt them get heavier and heavier.
Finally, it was over, and where Amanda once stood, there was not a small pile of clothes that began to shake as the shrunken actress emerged looking like a tiny child playing dress-up. “What happened?” Amanda demanded.
“We thought that you knew,” the director responded, “our owner has a hand in top-of-the-line science, and that has allowed us to launch a series of the movies with some transformation involved. We are projecting that in ten years, special effects will be a thing of the past, everything will be real, and you, Ms. Green, are the lucky actress to try out this new procedure.”
“Change me back right now!” Amanda demanded.
“Amanda, Honey,” Her mother attempted to calm her daughter, “think about what you’re turning down; if they’re e right, this film could make history.”
“That’s right, Ms. Green,” the director agreed, “future generations will read about you in their books.”
“Mom,” Amanda turned to her mother, “did you know about this?”
“Of course, dear,” Amanda’s mother answered, “honestly, I thought that you’d be happy; you’ve always loved dolls and know that you used to pretend that you were their size and live in their dollhouse.”
“That doesn’t mean that I want to be one,” Amanda explained. In her anger, Amanda dropped her shirt, which fell to the floor; Amanda was grateful now that she kept the appliance on as it kept her from feeling embarrassed even though she was naked.
“Ms. Green,” the director spoke, “if you do this for us, we are prepared to offer you a ten-year contract and parts in our next few movies.”
“What happens then?” Amanda inquired, “do I turn into a spider?”
“Amanda,” her mother lightly scolded.
Amanda had to admit that this was a career-making role, but did she want to be a test subject?
