Okay maybe the friends/co-workers are at a social club or something, celebrating an engagement or birthday party perhaps? Many things could happen here, a mysterious gas that causes random, spontaneous transformations of some kind is released, someone accidentally discovers they have a special power.

A mad scientist could maybe stop by, looking for some new test subjects? Sounds highly improbable...but hey, that's the fun.

Maybe some mysterious stranger crashes the party, and he/she is imbued with special abilities and decides to have some fun with Steven, Liz and company. Or a strange artifact/trinket could be found by one of the protagonists.

Anything else you can think of??
