Why was it always a chase with her?
The question was at the forefront of Peter Parker’s mind as he ran, jumped, and swung his way after the on-again off-again thief, hero, and lover. The Black Cat looked back at him and grinned. Even with the mask on, he tried not to smile back. Their relationship was complicated, even if he was the only one of the two to say so.
“You can stop running, Cat! Shocker already gave me my cardio for the day!” he called ahead.
“This is just the warm-up, Spider! The real workout comes later!”
Peter started running just a little bit faster. He’d found Black Cat perched atop the Baxter Building, almost like she was waiting to be caught. A strange device had found its way into her claws, and he was intent on finding out what it was. Felicia wasn’t usually a schemer— Well, not in the same way as the usual mad scientists and crime lords littering the city. But she certainly schemed.
Peter launched a web onto the nearest building and swung ahead, towards a penthouse he knew all too well. Felicia’s apartment, a rent-controlled palace with more square feet than Peter had known in his entire life. He should have known from the start she’d lead him here. He pulled up and landed in a somersault onto the balcony. A doormat with a grinning cartoon cat greeted him.
“Hey, Spider,” a voice purred from above. “Glad you could drop by.”
“You really need to quit it with the foreplay, Felicia. Chasing you halfway across the city really takes it out of a guy. And arresting you doesn’t do wonders for our relationship”
“Mm, funny you should mention that. It’s why I brought this.” She pulled out the strange device from behind her. It was shaped like a gun, with a trigger and a grip, but had wires poking out in every direction, and a pink glow emanating from the barrel. “I’ve been thinking lately, and I think we ought to see other people. We’re just too… on opposite sides of the law for my tastes.” Felicia dropped down and sauntered towards Peter. “Only I don’t want to let you go. I do love you, Spider. I just think you need a new mindset.”
“That’s not happening, Felicia. I can’t compromise my morals, not even for you. For us”
Felicia pressed a claw to his mask. “Spare me the rhetoric. We were never going to make it as lovers. But as sisters, we could bring this city to its knees.”
Peter would have been more concerned by the ‘sisters’ comment, but it was drowned out by the ‘city to its knees’ one. “I’ve never heard you talk like this before. Are you okay?”
“It’s sweet of you to worry, but there’s no need. You’ll get it soon enough.”
Peter had just enough time to widen his eyes when he felt the strange gun press against his stomach. Felicia pulled the trigger, and an electric ZAP rang though the air as Peter lost consciousness. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
