Chapter #4

The Misadventures of Lynn, the Arcane Trickster

    by: bobboled Author IconMail Icon
You are Lynn, a fledgling but up and coming rogue with a knack for the arcane side of things too. You've been taking small jobs, on the up and up so that you don't get kicked out of coastal city that you are currently operating out of, Gremoris. As wood elf in a human city, you would have been seen as the other, but in Gremoris, with it's massive port and grand trade network, you are just one of many exotic species surviving in this bustling city.

After many professionally completing many jobs you felt beneath you; spying on a corrupt politician, tracking down a stolen bag of family documents, tracking down an orc hunting party, stealing back a client's bag of jewels from some local thieves, and many others, you finally got something more substantive. You look at yourself in the mirror of your small tavern room, admiring your reflection as you strap on your gear for the coming work. Your lithe, chestnut body fits neatly into your adventuring gear; well worn boots, tight leggings, light-leather armor across your chest and shoulders, a black top with a band of blades across it, as well as a cowl and small bandana to hide your appearance. You tie back your medium length dark red hair so it won't be a bother if you get into a fight, and pull up the bandana until it reaches just below your yellow eyes.

You look down at the piece of paper in your hand, upon it lay the details of your next job. You were to infiltrate the sewers and find the layer of a band of goblins that had taken up residence there, and on top of that you were to steal back the lost body parts of the wife of the merchant's guild, namely her large bosom. It was well known that goblins, one of the few species forbidden entry into Gremoris, were dealers in body parts, specifically magically severed body parts that could be attached to anyone. Using their blades that only they could make and use, the goblins were able to sever any point on a living beings body and the part would remain alive and unblemished, with a smooth section of skin, scales, or whichever covered the beings body covering where the wound should be. They then sold these on the black market for extravagant prices, usually to noblewomen hoping to purchase a finer face or more prodigious assets, or sometimes for more darker purposes such as disappearing. Worse yet, while a body part could be reattached by anyone, it could only again be removed by a goblins blade or excessively strong magic.

In this case, the goblins had appeared several months ago, and had gone under radar as they were only targeting the poor, unnoticed, and those outside the city walls were the authorities would not notice. However, after Mrs.Helmond had had her breasts stolen while she slept in her bedroom, the alarm was raised. Several adventurers and guardsmen had attempted to locate the hideout, usually either ending in failure, or worse, coming back with pieces missing, added, or not at all.

You, however, could care less. This was just going to be one small step on your road to success, to becoming a legendary adventurer! You were already quite adept at magic, and your skills at sneaking and knifeplay put many others twice your age to shame. You were going to go down to the sewers tonight, and by the next morning you were going to be the rogue that saved the day!

You now stood at the entrance of a waterway far to the east of town, this one being the main method through which fresh water flowed into the area. It was tightly guarded, with a large steel cage enclosing the entrance, and several guards positioned around the perimeter. No one had considered it a feasible area for the operation, but you had sussed out that there was actually a back way into this section via a forgotten well that dropped directly into the system. Skirting the guards, you made your way down alley after alley until you came across the old section of town, and the well. You noticed some scuff marks around the 'locked' cover of the well. using your skills, you easily picked the lock, popped the top, and slid down the well using your gloved hands to gain purchase on the sides of the well and slow your descent.
