"I'm home!" Sang out Ash Ketchum as he entered his own house in Pallet Town. No longer a young kid, Ash was now eighteen. He was dressed in nothing but his boxer shorts and his trademark hat. He made his way to the kitchen. In the kitchen were two people: his mother and what looked like a copy of himself.
The copy of himself had weird eyes. Red pupils and pure black eyes gazed up at Ash from the simple kitchen table. The expression on the copy's face was unreadable. His mother was busy at the stove.
The copy was wearing Ash's clothing, though the colors were reversed. On the face of the copy was weird sigils and runes all over. As Ash watched, a sigil vanished.
"Welcome home, honey" said Delia.
"Welcome" echoed the copy in a slightly deeper voice.
"Who's this?" asked Ash, nodding at the copy.
"The better half" said the copy.
Delia turned and glared at the copy. "Arguably the better half"
The copy grimaced but said nothing.
"Ashley, I have something important to tell you" said Delia, turning to face Ash. Ash blushed at the name.
"Don't call me that!" Yelled Ash and the copy in unison. Ash and the copy exchanged a glance.
Delia giggled. "Come home, honey. And do hurry up, won't you? This is quite important"
"I am home" said Ash, confused.
"That is my better half?" asked the copy, jerking his head at Ash.
"Don't be rude" said Delia. To Ash, she said: "I've invited all your friends for your birthday"
"Two days from now" said the copy. "I'll break this pesky seal before then. It's very weak now and getting weaker by the moment"
"I know" said Delia. "That's the reason you're here now"
"Mom?" Asked Ash. "What's going on here?"
"I'll explain everything to you once you get here" said Delia.
"Explain" sneered the copy. "Yeah that'll be a fun conversation"
Ash woke with a start. He found himself in his sleeping bag next to Misty. Memories of last night brought a smile to Ash's handsome face. Dawn was just beginning to break. Just two days before his eighteenth birthday.
He and Misty were just outside Viridian City. The pair had gotten too sleepy to actually make it to the city so they set up camp on the edge of the forest.
