The mother left the room, leaving the two girls looking at each other in confusion. She returned a moment later, clutching Rebecca's new iPhone in her hand. She placed it on the table in front of her daughter.
"What's this for?" Rebecca asked.
"I'm giving you a chance to redeem yourself, and to accept some responsibility for a change. Your sister and I will be leaving in a minute. I'll ring the school and let them know you can't make it in today, tell them that you're under the weather."
"Thanks m-"
"In exchange," she interrupted "I am giving you personal responsibility for fixing the electronics, alright?"
"Mom, I can't go outside-"
"I know dear. That's what the phone is for. You're staying home today so that you can find an electrician using Google, you're going to hire them to come out and get the electricity up and running and you're going to pay them for their services."
Rebecca stared at her mother open-mouthed as she reached into her skirt pocket and pulled out her purse. She quickly counted out $30 in notes and placed them on the table beside the phone.
"Mom," Rebecca argued "If the electrician comes out then I'll have to open the door to him like this to tell him what the problem is. I'll probably have to pay him like this too!"
"I didn't say you had to hire a male electrician." her mother pointed out. "Now come on. Caitlin, go upstairs and get your things. We're leaving in two minutes."
-----
A short time later, Caitlin and their mother had left the house, leaving Rebecca alone and naked for the rest of the day. She looked down at the money and at the phone. Even though she was alone she still felt very self-conscious about her state of undress and kept her arms folded and her lower half hidden beneath the table. She clicked her tongue as she considered her options.
Yes, ringing an electrician - a female electrician - and paying her to do all the work seemed the safest option.
Rebecca rubbed at her chin thoughtfully.
OR she could slip outside herself to fix the circuit. Although she had been reluctant to do this before, she had some added incentive now. $30 and the day off of school. If she could fix the circuit herself then she'd have money and, once she was dressed, the entire day to go to the mall and do a little shopping. She looked up at the clock. The morning was moving along, now, and with everybody either at work or in school there was a good chance she could get in and out of the house without being noticed.
