Trevorina lays an ambush.

    by: knuckles Author IconMail Icon
You proceeded to the small stream. The water flowed out of the hole, some deep water source you didn't have the courage to explore. You placed your container into the stream, collecting droplets. As you collected the water, you couldn't help but notice the quietness of the surrounding life. Usually it was a cacophony of sounds, but everything was still. Something was wrong. You have no more time to consider that as suddenly you notice faint, dull thuds. They seem to be at random. Thud...Thud Thud....Thud........Thud. What could it be? Until now you had survived in a way that made you feel like you were on an alien world. Strange insectoid creatures were your enemy, and food source. The world seemed like another. But you were about to be reminded you were on Earth, and there were creatures much more powerful than Trevorina.

The thuds were both powerful and yet soft, like a predator practiced with being quiet. Without warning a paw the size of a couple of pickup trucks pressed through the foliage of grass above you, then planted on the ground no more than 20 yards away. The earth was displaced, or sunk underneath the creature. You looked up, the sun blocked out by the giant wolf now standing hundreds of feet over you and your world. It hadn't noticed you, and why would it honestly. With a few careful looks around, suddenly the wolf lowers its head low to drink from your stream. In moments, it has lapped up gallons upon gallons, it would take you weeks to drink. It still hasn't taken notice of your insect sized form. You can only watch in awe as it laps up more and more of your water. Suddenly its closed eyes open, and they miraculously lock onto your form. You almost go into panic mode. Two yellow eyes, larger than you, lock onto your form. Suddenly the massive head moves over your position as you freeze, hoping for mercy from the titanic beast. A black nose, multiple times larger than you centers over your position, *SNIFF* *SNIFF* you are practically sucked up by the wolf's casual inspection of your form. You hold to the earth, but the wolf cocks its head towards you. It doesn't understand what you are. Still, you are small, and therefore no worth more than a few moments of this creature's attention. It raises its head well above you. Hundreds of feet. Its cocked head returns to normal. Weird as your smell may be, the wolfess has decided you are nothing more than an insect. And with that, the creature turns to walk away, its hind paw coming somewhat close as you freak out. It heads for the treeline, the thumping evident. A bark, and then suddenly, and to your dismay, 2 wolf cubs emerge from the bushes. O God, you might be fucked. Meanwhile you couldn't help but look up towards the great creature. But something was niggling at your brain. A sense that you were being watched, but it clearly wasn't by the wolf that had decided to ignore your relatively insignificant existence. What were you feeling?
