Chapter #8

Fighting With Your Brain

    by: Doom Author IconMail Icon
You stand your ground, watching the beast intently. You know how a gecko feeds, and thus have a hypothesis on how to survive it. All you need to do is be quicker than it, faster to fight than it is to snap its mouth open. Thus, you train your eyes on that mouth, waiting for the moment when it -

The tongue, double the length of the gecko itself, shoots out. You swing your weapon, drawing blood from the soft muscle. Hissing, the lizard backs up, but the fight is far from over. If that sticky tongue should hit you, you will helplessly be pulled into the mouth and crushed in its jaws.

In its animal mind, it can't comprehend being defeated by so tiny a foe, a morsel that it could crush so easily. Thus it pads closer, and you twist your grip on your weapon. Clearly it hopes that a shortened distance will lessen your window of time to react, and it can overwhelm you.

It's risky, but this is just what you wanted.

The mouth tears open again, and the seemingly endless mass of tongue lashes at you. Ducking at the last moment, you drag your blade along its underside, snarling as you draw a thin line of blood from the beast. It's slower to withdraw the appendage, and you take advantage to hack at its root within the mouth. It's a quick, darting attack, and you jump back as the mouth closes again, but now the monster is hurting. Given enough time, enough similar hit and run attacks, you know you can win this fight.

Abby, of course, isn't willing to give you enough time. A shriek from above indicates that the teenaged god has witnessed the fight, and it is not pleasing to her sight. Her great hand descends, dwarfing not only your 1/8" self but also the monstrous gecko. She scoops the creature up casually, and you boggle at her casual display of dominance.

The sounds of her doting over her tiny, wounded pet carry down to you in the prison, and you wonder what she'll do to you once she's done with the gecko. Perhaps your stand has shown her that you're a man, not an insect, and she may grant you mercy! It's just as likely that she'll seek vengeance though, and crush you like a bug.

So, while you certainly could stand here in the open for her to see, maybe it would be best to hide, like under the lizard's bedding. You could also maybe clean yourself off in its bowl of drinking water, or wait here with your weapon at your feet to show you mean no harm.

Or you could dedicate yourself to trying to find an exit from this glass prison while you're alone...
