Something else

Undercover of night Mike used the medallion to assume a nightmarish form. His skin drew in becoming gaunt and desiccated. His teeth sharpened to points. His tongue elongating stretching it beyond his teeth draping to his chin dripping with bile. His foul odor permeating the air. A vile ghoul an undead that fed on the dead and vulnerable. His fingernails pointed sharp as a falcons talons. He stalked about the land sending animals scurrying from him as he went.

Denise grabbed a flashlight to checkout what upset the animals. She knew Mike might be galavanting as a fantastic creature. She’d set him straight if he perpetrated this. Out of the shadows stepped a dead thing, “Aaaahhh!” Her scream piercing Mike’s ears.

Mike said, “It’s only me.” Approaching Denise he found Denise holding her nose backing away.

Denise waved Mike off, “What are you thinking scaring the animals then me? Oh my that stench. Why do you smell so bad?”

“I am a ghoul they have the odor of death about them always.”

“Stop being a ghoul. I don’t want something that disgusting about.”

“But I am getting the feel for a horror story I am working up.” Mike said.

“You are done. Unless you desire to sleep outside a long way from the animals. Change into something else.”

Mike heeded his wife’s words. His skin plumped as he shrank. Shrinking to the point that his clothes fell about him. Mike’s torso skin separated altering into a green color. Becoming cloth with gold trimming. His legs a matching green cloth. The layer from his feet turned into leather with hand stitching and golden buckles.

Denise stifled a snicker, “That is much better. I like a good leprechaun. Promise me though that you won’t be evil like in the leprechaun movies. Be a rapscallion like in Darby o’ Gill and the little people.”

“Darling your will be done.” Mike bowed to Denise. Sticking a finger out at her and bolt of energy shot out. Her top faded away exposing her to his lustful looks.

His wife bent over lifting him up carrying him inside. “Listen here little man you better behave yourself. Where is my top? I liked it and want it back.”

“Tis only a wee bit of magic. I made it invisible from touch and sight for a minute.” Mike’s words proved prophetic. Denise’s top rematerialized as quickly as it vanished. “Sorry but I am exhausted from work today. You go soap windows or whatever else you naughty fae get up to.”

Mike’s disappointment that he couldn’t climb her mammoth slopes as they appeared to him, tempered by his desire to run wild. His feet only a whisper of noise as he ran out into the grass. Once something to step on now presented a jungle like challenge. He felt like an adventurer trekking through unexplored environments. “Mrroww.” The noise startled him. Mike turned catching sight of the neighbor’s cat Muffin stalking him. It often wandered far afield but they never minded it as it rid their property of vermin.

Only now Muffin viewed him as prey. Mike backed away slowly keeping a wary eye on the on the orange tabby. It crept methodically toward him when, “Look out below.” A musical voice called from above. Mike caught sight on a tiny bag plop on the cats head causing a powder to shoot out spreading about Muffin’s head. The cat sneezed as it drunkenly stumbled about until it passed out.

A female fluttered down with gossamer wings. Long pointed ears and flawless face. Her curves wrapped in twin leaves and nether region similarly covered. Mike smiled at her, “Thank you for the help.”
She returned his smile saying, “No problem. Us fae have to look out for each other. I call myself Sparkle wings.” Mike looked at her curiously. “I know they aren’t real sparkly right now. That is all Bramble foots fault. He thought it would be funny to coat them in tree sap. Cleaning them removed all of their luster. With a bit of care they’ll be back shining in no time.”

Another figure came from the shadows. With a male human torso with two antennae coming from his head. The remaining portion of his body that of a grasshopper. No aggressive gestures came from him and he nodded to Sparkle wings. Mike decided to introduce himself, “My name is…” He stopped mid sentence seeing the horror on both of their faces. “What did I say wrong?”

The pair looked to each other before facing him again. Sparkle wings said, “You weren’t about to reveal your true name to us? Don’t you know how that can give power over you?”

Mike responded, “No, I am sorry I misspoke. I call myself…” Mike paused for a moment trying to come up with something, “Patty gold buckles. You can call me Patty for short.”

The grasshopper man stepped forward offering his hand. Mike shook it as he said, “Nice to meet Patty. I Toad hopper. I once hopped twenty toads I did.”

Sparkles rolled her eyes dismissively, “You used your wings.”

“Did not.”

“Not worth fighting about but you did. I saw it.”

Toad said, “You weren’t there the time I didn’t use my wings. I was alone. Anyway you are a Leprechaun aren’t you?”

“Yes. Are there many around?”

“None that I know of. Though my mother’s second cousin’s aunt is married to one. That is how I knew.” Toad said confidently.

“He guessed.” Sparkles said.

“Why do you second guess me? I totally knew it.”

Sparkles shook her head, “Did not. I bet you never met your second aunt whatever.”

Toad ignored Sparkles, “We should show him to the village if he is new.”

“Better to visit the queen first. We’d get in trouble if we didn’t.”
